Popular Post fotografr Posted November 27, 2023 Popular Post Share #1 Posted November 27, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've recently posted photos of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter scanned from negatives shot in my very early days of photography. This is, of course, Ronald Reagan--the man who made Jimmy Carter a one term President. The turning point of the campaign came during a debate. Reagan's people heard that Carter was planning to make an issue of Reagan's age (sound familiar?), so before Carter had a chance to bring it up Reagan made the following statement: "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience." The audience at the debate broke out in laughter and in spite of making constant factual mistakes throughout the rest of the debate, Reagan went on to win by a landslide. fotografr Posted November 28, 2023 Author Share #2 Posted November 28, 2023 (edited) Correction: I stated that Reagan's comment about age came in a debate against Jimmy Carter. It actually was in a debate with Walter Mondale. Reagan defeated Carter in the 1980 election. Mondale ran against Reagan in 1984. (It sure would be nice if we had the ability to correct this kind of error with more than a 30 minute window. I can't understand that rationale for not allowing it.) stuny Posted November 28, 2023 Share #3 Posted November 28, 2023 Excellent shot. Whether one likes him or not, one must concede his ability to communicate. 5
George Collier Posted December 5, 2023 Share #4 Posted December 5, 2023 It was when Carter, in a debate, brought up an issue Reagan was weak on (I forget which one), that Reagan said to Carter, "There you go again. . .", which I always thought was a weak reply, but it worked.
LocalHero1953 Posted December 5, 2023 Share #5 Posted December 5, 2023 (edited) Without wishing to turn this thread political, (and writing as an ignorant foreign observer) it is poignant to recall the nervousness here at the potential (and actual) election of such a "right wing" candidate. How time moves the frame of reference! Edited December 5, 2023 by LocalHero1953

How time moves the frame of reference! Probably due to his movie background, many people saw him as this congenial, well meaning guy who could get along with anyone. By the end of his second term, the list of negatives far outweighed the positives--in my humble opinion. Before the election he interfered with the release of hostages in Iran so Carter wouldn't get credit for it; his trickle down economic policy only widened the gap between the wealthy and the working class; the Iran-Contra scandal; the list could go on (but I don't want to get political 😉). PS--I just checked out your website. Excellent work. I particularly enjoyed the Granada series. Edited December 6, 2023 by fotografr 1
