Elmar 21mm F4, Please, Leica ! ! !

I'm half way of building up my M system right now. Have a 35mm and 75mm at the moment. A 21mm on the wide end would be a logical step to take. These will make 28, 45, 100 on the M8. Not bad at all.

So, looking at what is offered right now:

Leica Elmarit 21/2.8 Asph

Zeiss Biogon T* 2,8/21 ZM

Zeiss C Biogon T* 4,5/21 ZM

and couple of old Leica 21s.

Well, it is clear what is missing here. Yes, a Elmar 21/4! There use to be a 21/4 Super-Angulon-M, which I heard is very good. Since Leica have started on the lower end with its Summarit-M line, a Elmar 21mm will complete the set too.

If there is such lens down the pipeline, I'll be the first place my order. Just imagine the compactness of a F4 21mm, and of course at the half of the Elmarit 21/2.8 Asph's price, please. I think it will be very popular.

What do you guys think?

This won't happen because Leica has a 16-18-21 tri-elmar ... the gap has been filled already.

I don't agree. The WATE is a very expensive lens and one or more f4 prime lenses at 16, 18, 21 and 24mm would be a logical step for continuing the range of lower cost lenses started with the 28mm Elmarit and Summarits.

I would love an Elmar 21/4 (and I also own a WATE)! I am not a Zeiss lover (high contrast, 1/3 stops on the aperture, and the look doesn't appeal either, although this is secondary), and will probably end up with a CV21/4, but I would prefer a Leica.

Zeiss 21/2.8 ZM, 21/4.5 ZM and CV 21/4 are all very decent lenses, how much performance improvement are you expecting from such a Elmar 4/21?

I suspect many folks looking at the slower aperture options are quite price sensitive and Leica could offer no advantage here. Just my .02. :)

Agree ... too crowdy offer from competitors, too next to 21 2,8, WATE... don't expect they announce a "cheap" 21 f4 (that of course would be welcome by many) ... but let's hope for such a lens in the 14-18 range...

Maybe I'm blessed, never have been in the past, but every M8 and all lenses I've bought recently, whether Leica or CV have been great. I have the CV 21 f/4 Skopar M-Mount and it is just prefect, especially for what it costs. Oh I bought it over the internet, sight unseen.

The 21 Elmarits (ASPH or not) are quite chunky though. The CV21/4 is gorgeous, and the size is perfect for travelling. I wish I could have brought one this past weekend in Vienna. A Leica 21/4 would have been perfect.

Not sure I would trade my CV 21, even money, for a Leica f/4 21.

This was shot last weekend @ Amicalola Falls with the CV 21.

I would look seriously at a 18 Summarit if it ever came to be.

I'm looking at the CV 21/4P. Are those of you who have this lens using it with an external viewfinder? Since it is coupled, and considering size and weight, I'd like to use it as-is if possible.

Bill

I don't use a external finder. I just use the WHOLE viewfinder window. You have to move you eye around the viewfinder to see all of what it will cover.

I even use the 1.25x magnifier with diopter lens attached and I can still see what it will capture.

Yes, the 21 F2.8 ASPH is bulky, and expensive, but it is worth it. It delivers. DR

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. Now I don't have any excuse not to go buy one!

I had the zeiss 21 mm f2.8 a great lens better then the 21 elmarit I never had the aspherical so that I cannot talk about that but the zeiss has great ergonomics . I hated the 21 with the big piece of glass the zeiss has a 46 filter just nice handling and sharp.

If you go for one opinion yes .... but the whole finder for a 21mm did not work at all for me and was the reason i sold the 21mm asph..... i hope you at least do not wear glasses .... because if you do.... even a 24mm, using the whole viewfinder, is not a very comfortable and precize combo !
