Questions on repaint M2

Hi!

I saw this online a vintage black paint M2 with silver chrome serial number. Serial number says it´s produced in 1965.

The repaint looks kind of old. Could it be an old factory repaint? The letters looks pretty badly done but the paint seems like authentic black paint somehow. Any opinions?

I don't know about the repaint, but it seems strange that such a late model doesn't have the built-in self timer and the rewind crank is for sure not original but M4/M6 style.

Maybe put together from different parts?

Wind on lever, not rewind crank but yes, a mix of parts I think and an older 3rd party repaint (not showing the type of brassing you'd expect on a genuine black paint camera either).

I looks pretty ropey, I'd just buy a nice looking chrome model.

Agree on the built-in selftimer. This camera does not have have the M4/M6 rewind crank as you mentioned...

Yes! Maybe a franken camera? Wind on lever could have been replaced some time to the M4/M6 lever wind. I also agree on the type of not common brassing.

The rear film door has the chrome film indicator as well. Seems like a bucket of parts assembled together...

Sorry, my fault, I meant M4/M6 film advance lever. Rewind indeed seems original M2 (or MP?)

There are some nice M2s out here that have nice paint jobs. This is not one of them.

I'm a bit suspicious about the black paint, along the edges it's brass showing through, so you could think it's all been properly stripped back to brass, but on some of what looks like newer wear (around the Open and Close catch) it seems to be silver showing. So has somebody taken some sandpaper to the edges and left the more difficult to remove large areas of chrome underneath? Leica would not paint over chrome even as an old factory repaint because paint won't stick to chrome, as shown by the rewind lever (the real rewind lever). It still may be an old finish though.

Yes! I agree about that! It went for a high amount on eBay, seems as long its black paint real or in this case not, people go totally crazy about it!

If-for-use, why not if the pricing is acceptable.

My advice is to look for a "not battered" chrome or black M2.
