Leica R3 Self-Timer

I have been exploring further aspects of my R3 and although it will be used only rarely I have experimented with the self-timer.

I think I have followed the instructions per the manual but the Self-timer does not fire the shutter -- it runs through its course and a click is heard at the end, but no shutter action. 

The film has been wound and shutter cocked, the self-timer is primed exposing a tiny silver button. Then I initiate exposure by pressing the tiny silver button.

Have I missed something, or have the years taken their toll on the self-timer mechanism?

my R3 stopped working many years (decades ?) ago.

I thought this would be the case, but no worries because I would have used it so rarely only when shooting from tripod to ensure absolutely no camera shake. I'll just have to be more careful and use a delicate touch.
