Herman Zhang Posted November 14, 2023 Share #1 Posted November 14, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Should I use ISO 100(pull) or 200 on my m240? Which one will give a better image quality?
Advertisement Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 Hi Herman Zhang, Take a look here M240 ISO. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 14, 2023 Share #2 Posted November 14, 2023 A pull ISO value will always give a lesser dynamic range. If the subject DR allows it, there is nothing against using a pull ISO, provided that you are careful with the highlights But in general the base ISO of the sensor will produce the best IQ.

dpitt Posted November 14, 2023 Share #5 Posted November 14, 2023 The OP asked about M240 at 100 ISO, the chart above is for the M9. This one below is for the M240. jaapv Posted November 14, 2023 Share #6 Posted November 14, 2023 Mea Culpa - it was because I was editing M9 photos whilst answering..🫤 1
Herman Zhang Posted November 14, 2023 Author Share #7 Posted November 14, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) But it doesn't seem to have such a significant drop in DR between 100 and 200. 200 will cuase an overexposure if my lens is wide open during daytime. jaapv Posted November 15, 2023 Share #8 Posted November 15, 2023 No, but as you can see the ISO pull is accomplished by flattening the highlights which means that there is a good chance of blowing them. Better to increase the shutter speed at 200 or stop down a bit. Or use an ND filter.
Gregm61 Posted November 15, 2023 Share #9 Posted November 15, 2023 I’ve never used the pull 100 option on my M262 or MP240, and will not going forward. If maximizing image quality is the idea, the base native ISO, 200 in the case of these bodies, is the best choice.

Why not close it down by a couple of stops?

New fashion is using the wide open lens to have less dof. Why buy expensive lens to use it closing down ? 😏 I know that for years as I lend my Noctilux 1.0 often and people rarely use other stops than f/1. Even if I told that I use f/5.6 with that lens and results are nice. Some would use neutral filter which can give another type of headache.

You close the lens down to control exposure and typically improve quality. Why buy an expensive lens and use it wide open?
