I have two cameras and three lenses: the M11M and the silver SL2, along with a silver 35mm Lux FLE, a black chrome 50mm Lux ASPH, and a 75mm Lux. When I want to carry just one camera and one lens for the day, I take the M11M with the 50mm Lux wide open. If I decide to carry two cameras and two lenses, I use the 35mm on the M11M and the 75mm on the SL2. Sometimes, I go with one camera and two lenses—then it's the SL2 with the 35mm and 75mm, or the M11M with the 35mm and 50mm.

I bought a MATE (medium angle tele elmarit), they are not easy to find and can be fussy. The E49 version.

I picked this up last winter because I was pleasantly surprised using the WATE.  I was skeptical, absolutely. I have the  APO Summicron 50, and the APO Summicron 35, as well as a bunch of others that cover the same spectrum, but I really wanted to try going 1 lens/1 body and this seemed like a good compromise. I had done it las summer with the APO 35/2.0 and was happy, but I wanted some more reach.

Boy am I surprised at how amazing this lens is.  F 4.0 minimum, but not an issue with travel photos as far as I'm concerned. I may have lucked out and gotten a not so fussy one, no issues so far (knock wood).

It's a good consideration for travel!  Would strongly consider!

Agreed. I had one in my film M days and it was very good.

At the moment I’m still stuck on my 35 Apo Summicron which seems to be on the M11 about 95% of the time! However, I’ve a hankering to get the Tri Elmar MATE again as I detest changing lenses and find that I carry glass I don’t use as a result.

A 35/50/75 Tri Elmar would be perfect for me, but you can’t have everything and the M11 files offer plenty of latitude for cropping.

All this talk of a MATE is very distracting. I’ve managed to convince myself I don’t need or want one at least half a dozen times. You chaps banging on about how great they are for travel is not helping one bit ….

Nah, good selection. of primes is much better.  See, problem solved!

Travel is a toss up for me.  Last year, I took my X2D and one lens, and was very happy.  An alternative would be the SL plus the 24-90 - a perfect travel combo I've used lots of times.  The SL is battered and still works like clockwork.

For M cameras?  Hmmm, well I guess I'd be tempted to take the M9M and M10-D (despite having to carry different chargers and batteries).  That leaves the lenses.  I guess a simple solution would be a 35 on the M10-D and a 75 on the M9M, with me left wondering if I could fit in a 50, perhaps a 28 and a 21.

28mm & 75mm is a nice combination, then some Panadol and sleep ...

If you don't use one you would never know if it suits you or not.

You would not see that huge (about 1/4) VF bloquerage at 28 mm.

You would never experience the frustation in dark area of f/4 max.

One meter limitation in 28/35 can also irritate sometimes.

You would never experience the 50/28 framelines not so sharply set.

Thanks chaps. I’m cured (again …. ).

Seriously, though, my overwhelming preference is multiple bodies with a lens permanently affixed on each, at least for the day. I’m just not interested in changing lenses on the move, as one inevitably is whilst travelling. A second digital body, perhaps even a Monochrom variant, is a far more appealing prospect. Hmmmm …

Travelling on holiday at the moment. A road trip across Europe for 3 weeks. London-Nancy-Luzern-st Gotthard- Como- Verona - Slovenia- Croatian Coast (Dugi Otok)- Balaton Hungary- Budapest- Vienna- Salzburg - Saarbrucken - London…. Although I have my M with me as I’m doing the driving and it’s a family trip it’s the Q2 that’s had the use so far. I’ll do some street photography with the M in Budapest.

Fantastic trip. I can’t wait to return to Budapest and show my children a part of their heritage. Enjoy!

My general view is that there's no need to make tourist-y shots while traveling. If you visit an amazing temple in Japan, you could worry about capturing it with a very wide angle lens—but of course those images will all be available already online. They're actually generic. So what really matters is capturing your experience of the trip. And that might be done best with a single normal lens, like the 35mm, or with two fairly artistic lenses, the 28mm Summaron and 50 Summilux.

APO-stasy!!!

Rereading this thread and the wide diversity of travel equipment choices.  Currently on the Shinkansen from Himeji to Tokyo.  Last year I posted just before Korea.  Both trips saw my 21mm Biogon c serving as my primary lens and a 35mm APO as my secondary lens on my M11M.  Duplicated this on my X2D with a 38mm & 25mm lenses for rainy days.  I’m thinking of challenging myself on my next trip with a 35mm f/1.4 ZM and 21mm Nokton.  I would be forcing myself a bit out of my comfort zone.  I wish that I had more confidence using the M11M when sprinkles turn to downpour.  Few seem to rely upon the 21mm focal length.  I’m strangely addicted to this focal length.

Talking about traveling in Japan, has anybody ever been at the Cosina factory in Nakano City, Nagano Prefecture? Looks like the Hokuriku Shinkansen line runs right by the factory and famous snow monkey park is 10 miles or so up the mountains from Cosina HQ. Do they have a showroom, giftshop, factory tours?
