Hi there,

Newbie here that has gotten into the R system. Recently got hold of a Telyt-R 560mm but I suspect "a" or "some" lens(es) are missing. Got all the 3 main parts (2 tubes - R mount to cam & trombone slider) & a head with the lens but that's all there is. Within one of the tubes it has a UV filter only. Tried to hook it up to both my R3 and R5, it just would not give me any distant focus at all except for an object less than 10-20ft.

Question is, to those who has this or similar 560mm. How many lenses are there and where is it/are they located? Within which tube section.

*I think I have gotten myself a dud*

Many thanks.

//Ian

Welcome to the forum.

I had one of these once. It was fun, but mine was missing the trigger shutter release so a bit of a pain to use.

It has two lenses cemented together, so basically one piece of glass. It’s a very simple lens.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. I feel better now  😄 however, when I mount it to the Leica R3 or R5, I could not get a clear focus for distant objects through the viewfinder. I could see close by objects ~10-20ft but distant objects are a real blur no matter how I adjust the trombone. Will investigate further.

Mine came with the trigger and left&right shoulder support but am worried I might get shot walking around with that  😁

@jankap For now the R3 / R5. Will get a new Canon R50 a few months later and get some mounts.

Did you get a Visoflex variant, possibly with a modified mount? Sometimes these old lenses have been messed up. Best to get one boxed and complete. Or get a Televit R which makes it far easier to focus using the lens head you have.

From memory a single element triplet achromat. Possibly doublet but anyway just one lens element at the front

The 560mm R (& Viso version) is a two element achromat, (one group). Over time (manufactured 1966-95), the glass can become hazy, but the lens' front section housing can, with care, be unscrewed, enabling access to the rear element for cleaning. After my example's lens was cleaned, the glass was haze-free. The only Leitz three element achromat is the 800mm Telyt-S. Novoflex/ Staeble made the excellent 3 element 400mm Noflexar-T single group achromat 'telescope lens' which can be adapted to Leica R and most other ICL camera bodies.

Ian, Is there a possibility the accessory Leitz 14182 extension tube, designed for Telyt R 400mm and 560mm lenses' "close focus", is fitted to your example?

The info on the visoflex states that it should focus from from 22 ft - infinity. And you say that you get focus between 10 - 20 ft. So it sounds like you have a macro extension tube mounted or possibly a macro extension ring.

Without it, you should be able to focus from 22 ft to infinity.

I think mine is the Telyt 560mm f6.8 with the shoulder stocks and trigger.

Many thanks dpitt, what a difference a 3 1/2inch tubing makes! Removed it and voila! I can see  😆

Thanks a lot dkCambridgeshire for going through the trouble of measuring and snapping the lens. Yes, mine is exactly this and I removed the Part# 14182 as what dpitt mentioned. Works fantastic and I am a happy camper. Here's my set of the 560mm.

As for the trigger's cable, not sure how am I going to connect to my existing R3 or R5 as its a different connector. Perhaps I have to have this type of cable and make some modifications to the trigger on the stalk?   Genuine Leica Mechanical cable release 50cm 20" #14076  found on eBay as example.

Thank you everyone for your great help and sharing of knowledge. Was searching for the manual but just couldn't locate one even in butkus site or anywhere online.
I shall try to take pictures *if it turns out ok* with the 35mm film and share it soon.

For the release trigger:

All you need is a long traditional threaded shutter release. It can be screwed in the R3 and R5 and can be mounted on the trigger button on the other side.

Will do that. Thanks.
