StephenH Posted October 16, 2023 Share #1  Posted October 16, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I prefer to attach the strap to the M5 so that it hangs vertically, as it was originally intended. The third lug, obviously added in response to folks who wanted to carry it horizontally, digs into my finger and is uncomfortable. Can it be removed safely? I'm guessing that it is screwed in and perhaps the screws can be used to "plug" the holes? Have any of you tried this?  Please advise.
Advertisement Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 Hi StephenH, Take a look here Third Lug on M5---Can it be removed?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dpitt Posted October 16, 2023 Share #2  Posted October 16, 2023 My advice is to sell your 3-lug M5 and buy a 2 lug version M5. That should leave you with around 150€ in change and no hassle with modifications. 3-lug M5s are more popular, so I think this trade should be fairly easy. Usually they are attached by tendons and ligaments, are very painful to remove, and you won't be able to play the piano afterwards.

There were improvements made to the 3-lug model over the 2-lug. The third lug (either one, top side or bottom side) shouldn't dig into your hand--and it would be your palm if you are holding the camera correctly. NigelG Posted December 10, 2023 Share #5  Posted December 10, 2023 (edited) Could you find an M5 3-lug friend and then both donate them to one of my M60s 😉… Seriously, if I was shooting film a 2-lug M5 (with working meter) would be top of my list Edited December 10, 2023 by NigelG

The M5 was originally designed with just two lugs on the "rewind" side.  I believe that was because the camera, being as long as it was, would be more comfortably carried vertically.  The illustration from the instruction manual shows the TWO lug version in "shooting" position. The "model" photographer looks comfortable.  The third lug was added, I am guessing, in response to folks (mostly doctors who could afford the camera when it came out) who didn't understand the utility of the configuration since they hardly used them to actually take pictures.  I have the three lug version, which is the later model. My understanding is that aside from being slightly younger, it incorporates some improvements along with , unfortunately, what I am asserting is an imperfection.  See the picture with which i try to illustrate the problem--the third lug digging into my finger. If one actually handles a three lug M5 the problem, I believe, would be obvious.
Pieter12 Posted December 13, 2023 Share #7 Â Posted December 13, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) It would seem that problem would exist (at least for you) with any 2-lug camera. All cameras seem to have a lug on the upper right side, although maybe the shape is what is bothering you. If you were to remove that lug, it would be pretty odd to attach a neck strap unless it just attaches to one lug. I would suggest you loosen your grip.
