Hello there.. today i spotted a dust particle on my q3’s sensor. I was in Tourin and went to leica store and even they admit it is a dust particle. Monday i’ll call the Italian assistance…

How can it be?? 😔

Amazing. Spend thousands for a camera, and somebody recommends taping over the microphone openings to avoid dust. Only Leica cultists would find such remedies even thinkable. At this cost, dust should not enter the camera. Period. End of story. I trust everyone who is still breathlessly waiting for this camera to arrive will take note of these little annoyances, and will stock up on tape while they wait for the camera that will change their lives forever.

Do you have to be snarky all the time???

I have not taped my Q, Q2 and will not tape my Q3 and never had issues. I know, especially with the Q, some had bad luck as does Stefano.

The camera unfortunately needs a repair. Maybe you can get a replacement from your dealer, but as the Q3 is in short supply, that might be difficult. As said, most unfortunately, but such things can happen.

Is anyone taping over the microphone openings to be on the safe side relative to dust entering the body? Been thinking of doing it as video sound isn’t important to me. Certainly was old school approach to original Q…

There is absolutely no need The microphone inside is dust and moisture sealed. Even the M240 did not need this - but it is a persistent silly Internet myth going around...

But it does. Guess you do not understand the difference to being: right versus dead right.

Me. I’d rather not ever have the hassle of dealing with dust on the sensor.

Sorry. No period and wrong story. When you bought the camera you could - should have known that the IP rating for solids (dust) is 5. That is dust-protected. Dust-tight would have been rating 6. The price has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Little update, I called the Leica Assistance this morning and they told me the camera has to be sent to Germany to have a sensor cleaning...but it will take 2 MONTHS before the camera will return to me!!!!

2 MONTHS...come on!! Wtf... Since i'm leaving for Kenya next month, i'll send the camera after my trip...but I though it would took a week...not 2 months to clean a sensor.....

Disappointed...

Well, it won’t be a sensor cleaning. They have to engrave a hot shoe, take off the top to replace it and they will give the whole camera a CLA. Well worth it. Don’t forget your IR filters for Kenia, they are essential as is having coded lenses.  The IR content of the light is very high there. As they have staffing problems two months is average.
Edit:

Mistakenly in the wrong thread. This is about an M8. As for dust on the sensor on a Q. They will have to take the whole camera apart…

Thanks for the information about the ir filters, i've never heard about that, though ir filters where only for ir photography... you mean UV?

I sold my Q type 116 (which was not weather sealed) because I had to send it 3 times to Germany for sensor cleaning. Almost every six months. Each time was 6 weeks delay. The 4th time they wanted to charge me 350€ because it was out of warranty. I sold it to get out of this nightmare.

What is happening with your Q3 scares me. For sure I wouldn’t another Leica dust gate in my life.

I know this must be painful to discover in a new camera/expensive purchase. Have you taken a flat field image to see if the problem is more widespread than a single dust mote?

Dust is a pretty common issue of course in cameras with removable lenses. In this case it might be best to take a deep breath and repair the imperfection(s) during post processing when it is noticed. It's a very quick repair with the clone tool in Photoshop.

Best of luck on you upcoming journey!

Quick question…did you tape the mic/speaker ports?

I’d had my Q five years, about 60000 frames and never has a dust issue…first thing I did when I got it was tape the ports.

I had the Q, Q2 and Q3, No tape, no dust on the sensor that i noticed. Just bad luck I guess for the op and interesting to read about the IP ratings above.

Some of the opinions are interesting as whether a camera is $2k or 6K doesn't really change my expectations about whether a particle of dust might reach the sensor.
My previous MP having dust inside of the viewfinder was indeed annoying! The tiny dot on the edge of the focus patch was noticeable until I learned to ignore it

My M11 constantly finds itself with dust on the sensor. 10+ years back when new to digital M's i was fastidious about trying to clean the M8>9>240. These days i couldn't give a monkeys as I don't find myself printing large photos and my 4K screen doesn't zoom 100% without a massive crop.

This thread made my want to check my Q3 for dust intentionally. I'm dust free. I will say that my original Q2 had dust inside the lens straight from the factory(no it didn't affect image quality, but it would affect resale value), the replacement had what looked like a used battery charger and the camera itself had a defect in the OIS unit as every now and then images would suffer from camera shake even on still objects using fast shutter speeds. Stuff happens, unfortunately and no company is perfect. I would say my luck with the Q2 was extreme as it was back to back. In your case since the camera is sealed from dust like that, it was 100% there from the factory. Have you thought about returning it for an exchange? How old is the camera exactly? I think 2 months for a repair of a new item is extreme as they should just replace it for you since this is no fault of your own. Keep us posted. The good news is that it's only one spot and you know here it is to clone it out.
