In my collection I have 2 Leica IIDs, I had never noticed that their Locking plate in the bottomplate was different. The older one has a standard Locking plate, the more recent one has a Locking plate without hook. Has anyone seen this type of locking plate before?

here are few variants of locking part, left is the oldest. It will not open FILCA. The second to the left will, there were few subvariants of this one. Your camera shall have bottom cover with lock that opens the casette, so either someone took older bottom plate, or changed the lock only. Does it have on the other side bar or full circle?

The serial number is 72715 and was delivered in Paris on 3 February 1932...I don't think it's an upgraded 1C. Giulio, when I wanted to check on your Leica II prototype which has a standard closure, I looked at the other cameras on sale and on the IC calf leather you find the same system and it seems that it is to be able to put the C or D cassettes! As stated in the attached text....

I found this in the Leica Archive some time ago.

Member Andreas G kindly translated it for me as follows.

Cassette.pdf

This translation is somewhat cryptic, but it seems it had been the intention to supply the FILCA D (Agfa-Leitz cassette), but this plan did not work and the FILCA B remained the most commonly used reloadable cassette for many years. FILCA C was around for a very short period, but it too quickly disappeared. Thankfully, Dr Nagel and Kodak did away with all of this for most people. There is a story to be written about all of this, not only covering Leica's cassette endeavours, but also the activities of Agfa, Kodak and others.

Yes - I understood that when the Leica II was introduced it was supplied with 2 Agfa-Leitz cassettes (with film), and a baseplate that didn't work with FILCA. The replacement parts to work with FILCA were quickly popular, so the design reverted. Possibly issues with Agfa-Leitz cooperation also were a factor.
