FOTOS beta does the background push like Pixii to your iPhone.  So I see the photos at once if you want it.  The best ever pairing.

On this mention of it does anyone here have any experience with the Pixii? Now they'll have a full frame one coming out soon I wonder if it's an alternative worth considering to the M11-D at around 50% of the price?

That's a really excellent breakdown Stuart, though when you do start to try to realistically assess expenditures especially within this madly costly Leica Universe then time, money and all else besides truly gets warped. One can justify anything even the unjustifiable. For me moving much more now to my personal imaging in film rather than the obligatory use of digital for professional work that preceded it I still feel that film is more worthwhile as a medium and the increased expenditure I guess I overlook. Anyway, with film I find I am shooting far less frames, maybe half a dozen or so on an outing and a roll of 24 exposures, ( I prefer the shorter length, don't really know why ), can sit in one of my film M's for weeks.

Which ever way the mop flops 10K does indeed buy a lot of film and processing and as I also print everything that I feel works as a snap there's that cost too.............Actually there's no escape, we're doomed.

For sure. There are ways. I bought my M10M and SL2 both used for around 5000 dollars. The SL2 in particular is my main work camera and I have had it since 2020, so I think it is a bargain. These days, for my art I mostly use 8x10 and 4x5, and I don't take tons of pictures (you really can't with large format anyway), but even then I had to stop color. Since an 8x10 sheet uses up about the same amount of film as a full 35mm roll, each sheet of color film is now around 30 dollars without processing. In this context, with chemicals etc, about 70 pictures buys you a used M6, and that is assuming you process and scan yourself, even with E6 (which I do). So at the moment I am only doing black and white. 4x5 and especially 120 are a lot more manageable. As a printer I see a lot of different cameras and results, and if it comes to practical and value questions, there is no question that buying used is extremely wise. The other thing is that I don't think there any bad interchangeable lens cameras from mainstream manufacturers. At least I cannot think of any. Tastes vary, but Panasonic, Fuji, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Hasselblad, Phase...all great.

I think the M D concept is great. The biggest deficiency of digital cameras since they came out has always been their user experience as compared to the best of film cameras. The M10D in particular really gives an incredible photographing experience. I was lucky to borrow @sebben's copy and at least to me, it felt extremely freeing to use. That is I guess why I am a bit sad they chose to get rid of the vestigial thumb rest/winder. I think it seems like an anachronism until you actually use it. I wonder if it is possible to just retrofit it under the M11D shutter release? I know that winding levers just sit under the chromed area on most M's...perhaps it is possible to add it.

BTW the M11-D is just a normal addition to the M11 family, right?

So what's the “one more thing” for the 70th M3 anniversary that Leica is almost conspicuously silent about?

Really nothing or an analogue M3 LE with the original frame lines on M-A basis or a limited edition chrome version of the M11-D (brass heavy)?

Please don't let it be a Q with another focal length and the marketing telling me that they are ahead of their times like they were 70 years ago or something like this.

I wish something like this would be possible but since the On/Off switch is located here (it wasn't on the M10-D) I’m afraid it can't be done. And I never saw a "modded" M camera anyways (painting aside). 🤓

Assuming you don’t use the hotshoe (🤔https://idsworks.store/products/foldable-thumb-grip-for-leica-m10-m11?variant=42605500071981

The switch is under the winding lever on the M7, but I imagine the space has to be built in for it there.

i am truly wondering what engineering or pecuniary or esthetic reasons led Leica decide against that thumb rest for the new m11d ?  i mean that part really stands for the missing "i-Tüpfelchen" on the m11d, the absent icing on the cake, isn't-it ?  everything else is perfect, for my taste at least.

my only ONLY complain in the future while using the new m11d will be this missing fake lever (beside perhaps the burden of those 61MP heavy files that my home computing setup needs to get used to).  i would easily pay quite a sum for retrofitting my future m11d with this crappy piece of metal à la m10d,  so much for sure !

anyway, i hope i will get to see that armless m11d at our local LeicaBoutique this coming thursday...

I can think at least of three reasons…  😁

a) less construction parts (I know, I tend to repeat myself here)
b) every M derivative is supposed to please another part of the heterogenic user… err fan group (this time the fake lever haters)
c) they just don't have the balls to stand the laughs from non-users

(multiple choice possible)

Emotionally I guess I'm with you concerning the loss of the M10-D's faux winding / thumb support lever as far as the M11-D is concerned I'd go for a Thumbie as a really decent alternative option. If you do get a new M11-D I would recommend that you try one, it's been a standard accessory on all the M10's I have owned to date, it just "works".

I have the original Pixii that was upgraded once to the next sensor, still in APS-C format.  It's great but exposure was iffy and image quality nowhere near any Leica.  Great for artsy dreamy shot with random over/under exposure.  Pushed to the iPhone perfectly though.  This is where Leica got the idea of the background push.  I'd like to upgrade it to full frame and compare later.  But still a novelty camera and not a replacement for any Leicas.

Let's just admit the faux lever was quite idiotic and celebrate the streamlined body of the M11-D!:)

you know @setuporg holding my heavy m10d attached to an equally heavy *lux lens in my right hand without the faux lever is quite unpleasant, cumbersome and unstable, not to speak about a painful fatigue that can develop over time in the right hand !!!  that stupid thumb rest really makes all the ergonomic difference !

nop, i don't use any of those nitty pretty gritty leather protectors/bags/grips, just bare metal, with mittens during the canadian winter.

I’d really like to try an m10d or md typ262 for a prolonged time just for the experience, I’m hoping a few more creep onto the market once this one is out. I think the m10r was the last new M camera purchase for me, almost 10k for a new M body is more than I’m comfortable spending. I also think as the prices rise, we will see a bigger depreciation sooner in the cycle when it comes to the used market, maybe not for this body as it’s a niche but for the standard line.

I did have an M10-D for a while. I didn't like and didn't use the faux lever. As a real old school film camera user I don't hold a camera in one hand, but use a neck strap for safety and balance the camera in the palm of my L hand using thumb and index for aperture and and middle for focus (just on the tab). The right hand just lightly holds the body, thumb on the thumb wheel and finger for the shutter (or on/off). I found the lever got in the way of the thumb wheel and tended to unbalance the camera as its the right hand thats supporting it. Horses for courses though, I just left it folded in. What bothered me intensely was the on/off on the back. Anyway I won't be buying an M11 of any sort as I've just added an M10-M.
