This is what remains of a tree named the Jackson Oak in the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. It was at one time a huge, majestic tree with a massive canopy. When it became apparent that it was dying, the staff decided rather than cut it down--which is the normal procedure--they would let it go at its own pace untouched. It is named after, Colonel Joseph W. Jackson, an Arboretum founder and crusader for Arboretum fund raising and land acquisition.
