Is the 240 still a good choice to get started with a M?

Yes, the M240 takes amazing. I brought it with a 50mm when I toured Switzerland last year. But it’s simply too heavy and with my aging eyes, manual focus is challenging. I had since sold my M240 system and bought a Q2.

200 grams  difference, if not less .

But my back hear you. 

I would slap 28 2.8 mm pancake on M, instead of selling while it is still  functioning..

Yes for me M240 family is my choice, not for everybody though.

The OP asked about M240. Well it is a marvel (and I am sorry for having traded it in.
Great results, sharpness (focus, or resolution as others say) and super colours. 
So easy to use. How? Cant explain.

I've been using M for a long time, including the Edition 60 and M246, but got an M-P just now to shoot color videos while carrying one rangefinder camera all day.  It delivers in spades.  It's a fantastic starter camera.  In fact it makes Leica dropping the video from M such a blunder.
