topoxforddoc Posted November 20, 2007 Share #21 Posted November 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Rich & Charlie, thanks for the much needed support. Any rules of thumb about using ISO higher than 100? I upgrade the firmware & thought I that allowed me to use a 4G card, but they don't work. Any Clue? Ben Ben, I've only used 2GB cards (transcend ultra and sandisk ultra II). I've gone to Firmware 1.3. The noise is much lower at higher ISO settings esp ASA 800. Before 1.3, I used to use ASA 400 and -2EV for low light stuff like stage photography. Charlie

rougewave Posted November 21, 2007 Share #22 Posted November 21, 2007 Does anyone out there have a copy of the pdf files for the DMR or the R8/R9 Instructions? I don't know why Leica continues to take away information on products ir has sold to loyal customers, even if they don't sell them any longer. It makes no sense to me. Thanks, Ben

Thanks, Ben Ben, before you make such statements, check the Leica homepage. Please follow these links to get the instruction manuals. You might not need the German/English version from the ...camera.de... page, i have listed it just for the sake of completeness. The French, Italian and Japanese versions are available as well. I upgrade the firmware & thought I that allowed me to use a 4G card, but they don't work. Any Clue? Ben Ben, I use 4Gb most of the time with v 1.3 firmware. Be sure to get the SD 4Gb and NOT SDHC that do not work with the DMR. I use the transcend 4Gb SD cards and they work perfectly giving approx. 200 RAW images per card. I agree with all the comments, the DMR is indeed a fantastic imaging device and very robust too. I have used this camera in dusty (outback) and salt water environments and without a trace of dust getting onto the sensor. Even if it did, it is simplicity itself to clean the sensor compared with any "integrated" digital SLR. I agree with Charlie, the R10 would have to be very, very good to tempt me away from mine. If anyone is interested in mine, I may sell it around Christmas or so. I am mostly shooting the M8 for digital and I am shooting more and more medium format film, so it is not as useful to me anymore. It was a replacement, so it is not that old and does not have that many actuations on it...something around 15,000 or so. It is in great shape still. What is the web address of the directory of the archive files? Thanks. Guy On the USA site, I start here: Leica Camera AG - Downloads Then choose a category in the drop-down list. If you want the DMR manual select Single Lens Reflex Cameras, then Digital-Modul-R subcategory.

You could as well choose the shortcut and copy/paste the above links directly into your browser. This, at least, works with Firefox.
rougewave Posted November 23, 2007 Share #30 Posted November 23, 2007 Charlie, sdai, David, Charles thanks for the directions. Found them & was able to download them. maddin, sorry to stir the pot. I'm still feeling a little tender that Leica removed all the pdfs & references to the Digilux2 from their site. It still amazes me that they don't go out of the way to reward such a loyal customer base with as much support/info regarding all products they have made & sold. I worry about the future development of the DMR I just purchased. I hope they continue to develop the firmware/software so that these users can invest further in the R system of cameras, lenses and digital art. As an example, I just got a used 19R. Here are 2 new images I took this morning. The Leica world is a beautiful place! Happy Holiday to all. Ben Welcome, dear visitor! If you still need the Digilux 2 file, I would try finding them for you on the weekend. And do not worry about your DMR, mine is just about a year old as well and whenever support was necessary the CS was there. That was mostly necessary for the Rs in front of it;) Recommendation: Make it a habit keeping the old firmware update files on your computer, as they usually disappear from the L-web page once the new ones are there. On a general note I certainly cannot complain about support from Solms. Much to the opposite. Look for direct contact. cheers
rsolomon Posted November 23, 2007 Share #32 Posted November 23, 2007 If anyone needs a Digilux 2 manual let me know i have the pdf. i also have the DMR manual in pdf as well as firmware V 1.1, V1.2, and V1.3 , just ping me offline and i can email to you . rsolomon Posted November 23, 2007 Share #33 Posted November 23, 2007 As far as firmware updates for the DMR.... in the past they have been and few and far between, however 1.1, the intial formware was terrific but IMO limited. If you shoot only RAW there may never be a need to move beyond it. V1.2 was somewhat of a bust with leica practicially recommending V 1.1 over 1.2.... it seems some people had sucess with it. For me V 1.3 was a rock solid firmware that provided much better support for jpeg, white balance, and cleaner capture at the higher resolutions. There might be some minor tweaking for a firmware V1.4 but not sure the demand or need is really there - everyone seems content. As far as customer support for the DMR, i think you're safe, Leica NJ seems committed to making things right with a DMR that comes in with a problem. .... the issue at some point will be spare parts... that could be years away. i was always hoping there would be a DMR II, or an upgrade for the DMR as technology allowed; at this point is seems R10 is the next step for the leica R system. But as i have said a number of times an R10 wount necessarily be better then the R8/R9 DMR combo. afterall the R5 wasn;t more robust then the R4, the R5 functions were a subset of the R4 functions. The R10 could be more of a "mainstram camera" aimed simply at gaining market share and profit and in the spirit of "our Dad's old Leica...... rougewave Posted November 23, 2007 Share #34 Posted November 23, 2007 Martin & Richard, thanks for lowdown & offer of the D2 pdf. Although I bought the camera new, I was unfamiliar with the Leica website. I was always just a denizen of the numerous midtown camera shops. Very analog. I'd love a copy of the D2 pdf & earlier firmware V. 1, as I erased it when I updated to 1.3. I'm not sure how to ping either of you, but my email address is ben@nysity.com, when you have the chance. rick_dykstra Posted November 23, 2007 Share #35 Posted November 23, 2007 Ben, I see you're using your new DMR on an R8. Any compatibility issues? Was the R8 already prepped for DMR in any way? You're getting good results. So tempting, but that R10 is only 18 months away (I predict it wont be available until mid 09, and I'd wait anyway for the bugs to be found.) stuny Posted November 23, 2007 Share #36 Posted November 23, 2007 Rick - I'm using an R8 with the DMR. At first it wouldn't work. I visited Leica in NJ, and all they did was clean and adjust contacts contacts on the R8. It worked within 15 minutes.
rougewave Posted November 23, 2007 Share #37 Posted November 23, 2007 Ben, I see you're using your new DMR on an R8. Any compatibility issues? Was the R8 already prepped for DMR in any way? You're getting good results. So tempting, but that R10 is only 18 months away (I predict it wont be available until mid 09, and I'd wait anyway for the bugs to be found.) No problems to report, except failing vision due to old age & onset of forgetting about what I was thinking about. Dispite what the TV pundit say, the 50's ARE NOT the old 30's. I bought the R8 a couple weeks ago from someone in San Francisco that hadn't used the camera in years, near mint. I ran some film through it & she just purrrrred. I bought the DMR from one of the oldest & most respected Leica dealers in NYC. He sold me my first M in the early 70's. He gave me the back and a 24mm lens, said go have fun & if you like it, thats fine. Well, I'm not looking back! Maybe it's my age (lack of wisdom), but one can always be looking for something better, but the fun for me is in the doing. I know this equipment is far out ahead of my skills. So what! I'm having a ball shooting , stumbling and learnig. You should have NO RESERVATIONS about htis kit. With all the boo-hooing out there, It's still difficult to buy one of these here in the city without paying a premium. I'm not a collector, so I can't speak to the $ side of the equation, but these cameras aren't being made for collectors. There aren't collectors that have their images in any of the Leica galleries or other galleries I know of. These backs are engines. They work great & when they don't, my dealer told me Leica will go to end of the earth to fix them because this equiment is iconic for them. I believe him. Why wait 18 months. You have no real idea what they will deliver. I'm sure it will be grand, but in the hear & now, you could be shooting. BTW, you work attets to your patience & perfection. Great eye candy. Good luck.
