bernie_fr Posted August 4, 2023 Share #1 Posted August 4, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everybody I just purchased a M5 in very good condition at Leica Store Beaumarchais in Paris. This one has been modified to work with 1,5 v batteries. I tried to use Varta V625U/LR9 batteries, but theses ones seem to be too thick to close the battery compartiment. Did someone experienced similar problems with this kind of batteries ? And what do you recommend to solve the problem ? Thanks in advance for your help ! nitroplait Posted August 4, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 4, 2023 Without seeing the actual battery chamber or knowing its exact measurements it is to answer. If the Leica Store sold it to you as modified to 1.5V batteries, they must surely also know which batteries fits. The Varta batteries you mention are alkaline. It is advisable to find a silver oxide alternative. If you end up having to make your own adapter, you could use the common SR44.
a.noctilux Posted August 4, 2023 Share #3 Posted August 4, 2023 Which battery came with the M5 ? Leica Beaumarchais is good place to buy such Leica anyway.
bernie_fr Posted August 4, 2023 Author Share #4 Posted August 4, 2023 Leica Beaumarchais just confirm me that the "new" Varta batteries are too thick to come with the M5. Their technician recommands The Energizer EPX625G... If this could help... Thanks guys for your comments.
Matlock Posted August 4, 2023 Share #5 Posted August 4, 2023 The problem with the EPX625G Alkaline cell is the voltage is not constant and will give inaccurate meter readings as the voltage drops. Cameras that have been adjusted, like this M5, were originally intended to use Silver Oxide S625PX cells but these are now largely unobtainable. a.noctilux Posted August 4, 2023 Share #6 Posted August 4, 2023 Years ago, when I had one of my M5 modified for 1.5V, since then I use "size" adapter for easy to have SR44. Welcome, dear visitor! Kref Posted September 29, 2023 Share #7 Posted September 29, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I, too, bought an M5 recently from a used camera store (Fina Foto). Previously to selling it they had it CLAed at Dimas Fototechnik. Dimas recalibrated the meter to 1.55 V, too. The shop told me that they will ad a Varta V625U/LR9 battery, but since this does not fit all M5 (strange, I thought there are standards for that, if a battery fits one M5, it should fit them all, we are talking about a GERMAN camera, dammit!) he would also add an adaptor ring. Turns out the Varta does fit into my M5, but for good measures I also tried the adaptor with an LR44 battery. Works perfectly fine. Welcome, dear visitor! costa43 Posted June 24, 2024 Share #8 Posted June 24, 2024 (edited) This might prove useful to somebody. Best solution I’ve found for unmodified m5 cameras is an mr9 adapter which allows you to use the standard and readily available sr43 (386) batteries in an m5. Kanto (Japan) and Small Battery Company (UK) sell them. You will need to get the version that reduces the voltage from 1.55v to the old mercury 1.35v or the meter reading will be out. By all accounts this is a permanent fix to the problem. Edited June 24, 2024 by costa43
Pyrogallol Posted June 24, 2024 Share #9 Posted June 24, 2024 The Small Battery Co is good for any unusual battery.
