Hi all,

Today I have discovered the curtain on my Leica MP is broken (see link below). I am really bothered by this, mostly because I leave for Japan on August 13 for a week and won't have my film camera to take with me. I had the camera purchased from Leica Australia (who I love) September 2020, which means its out of warranty. I believe all Leica cameras are 2 year warranty. It is super upsetting that the shutter curtain has seemingly broken for no good reason after 2.5 years as I look after my cameras.

Has this happened to anyone, and what can I expect this will cost me? Leica Aus have someone local that can fix it so believe I will avoid the current 6 month waits at Leica Germany right now, but still, it means I will probably not have this by the time I am due to go to Japan.

Annoyed.

Good luck! Warranty work should take 2 months as they get priority.

According to my pal who works for Leica AU, the crew who does our servicing in Melbourne has a 12 day turnaround time. Which puts me at knifes edge. According to the servicing persons website, it’s 2 weeks for repairs, but 5-8 days for professional worker repairs. Whatever that means. So I’m assuming I should be a let to get this done urgently.

Here is to hoping!

and thank you mate!

Sounds like a great opportunity to buy a second M film body as a 'backup'.  And now super easy to justify to your SO.  You're welcome.

Didn’t you know that’s Leica’s plan to increase sales?

A little update, Leica Australia has taken it off my hands and thinks this repair will be doable to have done prior to my trip as an expedited job. In discussion with them, they believe it can be repaired without requiring news parts. Failing that, it is still repairable and may just require some additional time and parts. All of no expense to me.

Great outcome, lets hope for the best!

Thanks all for your help.

Okay so an update for those that care.

The camera was unable to be repaired before my Japan trip mid August. It was needing spare parts to replace. I was told it could take 4-8 weeks for them to arrive.

Fast forward to today, Leica AU has emailed me saying that Leica Germany doesn’t expect to see the parts I’m needing until at least January. Which makes me nervous because that means it’s likely longer if that’s their estimate…

Leica AU did offer to loan me an M11 as they don’t have any analog cameras in their loan pool.

It’s just so disgustingly disappointing that Leica Germany can just say they have no spare parts for such an important element of their camera. If they recognise they have no parts today, why does it take until January to sort it out? Just so so so bad.

A $9,000 camera that’s still in production, but without being able to be serviced. In a timely manner.

Welcome to the Leica world of not caring after they made the sale.

If you want that repair sooner, and are willing to pay out of pocket, it may be better to contact an independent repair shop.
