pop Posted July 14, 2023 Share #1 Posted July 14, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just seen on Kickstarter: a project to produce vegan films. Really: films that are produced without any gelatine. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1469449603/vegan-friendly-photography-film?ref=thanks-copy
Advertisement Posted July 14, 2023 Posted July 14, 2023 Hi pop, Take a look here Vegan films. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Doug A Posted July 15, 2023 Share #2 Posted July 15, 2023 (edited) If this is legitimate, I wonder what they are using in place of gelatin. Albumin is out because it isn't vegan. And I wonder who they talked into switching a coating line over to such a drastically different material. But what makes me doubt the whole thing is the claim that they are doing color film. If the rate of saturation of the multiple coating layers isn't very close to that of gelatin I don't see how existing color chemistry could work. FWIW I am sympathetic to concerns about the mistreatment of animals in the human food chain. But the gelatin used in making film (and photo printing paper) is an exceedingly tiny portion of the total production of gelatin. No animals are being killed or mistreated for the express purpose of making film. Edited July 15, 2023 by Doug A
TomB_tx Posted July 15, 2023 Share #3 Posted July 15, 2023 Not marketed for me. I grew up in the "There's always room for Jello" generation.
pop Posted July 15, 2023 Author Share #4 Posted July 15, 2023 I have second thoughts about this campaign. I asked them how to process both the B/W and the color films, and all they've come up with was 'just as usual'. See the FAQ for the verbatim answer. 250swb Posted July 15, 2023 Share #5 Posted July 15, 2023 (edited) It's the thick end of an entirely logical wedge, remove the use of gelatine and remove the animals that make it. After all we're told we shouldn't eat them and they only fart all day, so what point is there in a cow existing and taking up space if you can grow a field of carrots instead? I can't help thinking the dinosaurs should have voted for farming and a few peaceful years alive rather than the meteorite option, the fools. pop Posted July 15, 2023 Author Share #6 Posted July 15, 2023 (edited) It's a reasonably robust heuristic rule: whenever the resident belittlers turn up and do their thing, there must be something worth belittling. Thanks for reminding me. Edited July 15, 2023 by pop

Right. There's no point in eating cows. Eating their fodder (or the equivalent) instead of their meat will save us over 95% of the energy wasted by raising and killing them in the process, plus all the dreadful stuff that comes inevitably when herding animals for their meat.
Borna Posted July 20, 2023 Share #8 Posted July 20, 2023 Why not, would be fun to try it out. I am favor for anything that pushes film long into the future.

They claim that their team of vegans had "...a lifelong passion of analog photography..." yet, somehow, were all amazed to discover that "...film stock is made using animal gelatine...". Really? Call me 'Thomas the Doubter' but I don't buy a single part of that story for one second. A non-animal-based film stock would be perfectly fine by me, though, so it will be interesting to discover whether the project is genuinely viable or merely a scam aimed at fleecing the gullible. On a lighter note... I believe it was Julian Barnes who, when being assailed by some 'Save the Whale' activists who were listing all the products the poor creatures were being slaughtered in order to provide, replied; "Sounds like a perfectly good way of using them up"...... Anbaric Posted July 20, 2023 Share #10 Posted July 20, 2023 This may be the least convincing Kickstarter I've ever seen, completely free of any credible details. Pretty rendering of those film cans, though.
