Hello,

Does anyone use portable SSD drives with Q2/Q3? Wonder if possible to connect it directly to camera and backup photos with no using computers or iPad in between.

That drive looks good:

Thanks!

It might be as simple to backup to an iPad/tablet and then transfer to a cloud account. That was you have two backups in case one gets lost or damaged.

I don't have my Q3 as yet but my plan is to use the Samsung T7 SSD.
My understanding from the forum so far is that you need to use the
Mass storage option in the camera and you need a suitable Thunderbolt 3  (USBC) cable

Thanks everyone!
Yes, I know about making backups to iPad, Mac, cloud services, etc. My only question if Q2/Q3 "understands" connected SSD drives and can copy photos from card in camera to the drive directly.

I hadn’t thought of doing this. Do you use a Q2? If so, how do you get the images out of the camera directly? I can only think of extracting the SD card or the FOTOS app.

I am sure the Q2 can't do this. It has no USB-C port.

Can you explain how you do this please? Exactly how do you save the camera images to the Portable Drive?

Given that the Q2 has no external connectors I fail to see how this can be done.

Also, in the case of the Q3, the Q3  would need to be able to operate as a Mass Storage Initiator and not just a Target which is the normal way a camera works. Usually the Initiator is a computer, tablet or phone which reads/writes to the mass storage device (or other target such as a USB card reader or camera)

Might be a moot point then.  I use this with my Nikon...never actually tried it with my Q.

I just tried connecting the drive mentioned above (SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD) directly to the Q3, and there was no response at all from the camera to indicate that mass storage was attached. I have changed the mode in Camera Settings>USB-Mode>xxx to Mass Storage and Select on connection. When connected, no prompt. Don't think this will work to transfer images without iPhone, iPad, or computer.

I reviewed the manual, which has no information about Mass storage or Select on connection modes. Only covers PTP and MFi.

Maybe a firmware update will help?

Transfer from camera to drive was never a feature that’s been announced on any Leica camera.

Mass Storage mode is used for connecting the camera to a computer, tablet or phone that supports external storage. In doing so, when the camera is connected to the computer/tablet/phone, it shows up as an external drive on the computer/tablet/phone. Selecting other USB modes on the Q3 will not allow you to mount it as an external storage device on your computer/tablet/phone.

Apple MFi mode is only needed for iPads and iPhones with lightning connector. Newer iPads that have USB-C does not need the Apple MFi setting.

PTP mode is only used for tethered shooting with software that support tethered program using Picture Transfer Protocol.

There are very few cameras that support direct data transfer from camera to an external drive and even those that support this normally do not support allowing you to transfer data from the storage medium in your camera to an external drive via USB-C. For example, the Panasonic S5II does not support writing to an external drive, only the S5II X model which is geared towards people that want to shoot high bit-rate video codecs support writing to an external drive during shooting. Even then, it only supports writing to external SSDs during recording/shooting and not transfer of images and video to the SSD from the internal SD card after they have been recorded on the SD card.

well that's discouraging.  Thanks for testing. I don't have my Q3 as yet to try this.
My hope is to be backing up the images while travelling so as to have copies on the SD Cards as well as the SSD.
My next option may be to look at copying to iPad and then from that to the SSD. if that was possible.
I need my camera to arrive!
EDIT:
I also have the LACIE 4TB Rugged Portable USB Type-C mentioned by Bobtodrick here So I shall experiment with that as well.
I really need my Q3 to arrive.

I hope that this is of interesting to others.
In theory copying from Camera to iPad and then iPad to SSD does work (I tested). I don't know how practical that method would be though
with the very large original DNG sizes.
Plan C will be visiting a friend while travelling and utilising his computer

I now have my Q3 and updated the FW to 1.2. I have to confirm that there appears to be no apparent functionality when I connected a Samsung T7 SSD. Helpfully explained by bewee in #14 of this thread, I can see that I misunderstood what may be possible for backing up during travel.

My misunderstanding as I learn about the connectivity, thanks.
At first try' I haven't succeeded in copying files from camera USBC to mac via cable with USBC connection nor USB3 either.
Conventional method with card reader is fine.
