Advertisement Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Hi Dave in Wales, Take a look here Sigma 24mm f2 DG DN or Panasonic LUMIX S 24mm f1.8 for SA2-A. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
darylgo Posted July 8, 2023 Share #2 Posted July 8, 2023 I’ve been tempted to buy Sigma series lenses several times for an SL and a TL. How’s the performance? My guess is they’re very good to excellent, only bested by Leica in the corners.

On the SL the Sigmas - at least the ones I’ve tried - are much better in the corners than any M mount lens.
Stuart Richardson Posted July 8, 2023 Share #4 Posted July 8, 2023 Agreed. They are sharper than M lenses in my experience as well, except in the very center.
huwm Posted July 8, 2023 Share #5 Posted July 8, 2023 The Lumix S series are no slouches either and better suited to Wales with regards to weather sealing 😄 I've switched for that reason and for the sleeker look My only Sigma now is in fact the 24mm f3.5 which lives on my CL when it's not acting as my Lumix S 70-300 teleconverter It's a nice lens

Thanks, good to know, I need to look further. How do they compare in the corners with the Leica L Summicrons, if their performance is close my interest will be further piqued. If you shoot L mount and can swing it, the APO Summicrons are some of the very best lenses ever designed. They are exceptionally sharp from edge to edge even wide open. Beyond even the S lenses when it comes to sharpness, microcrontrast and freedom from aberrations. The very best of the M lenses get there when stopped down a bit (like the 50 APO, 90mm APO Summicron M etc), but the wider they are, the worse they fare on the SL, even though it is designed to work with M lenses. Whether these differences are practical in your photography are another story, but especially if you crop in or make larger prints, the APO Summicrons are mostly without peer. The 105mm Sigma is up there, however as well. Edited July 8, 2023 by Stuart Richardson

At the moment they compare really, really well, especially because there's no Leica wide angle prime.
darylgo Posted July 8, 2023 Share #9 Posted July 8, 2023 Thanks @Stuart Richardson @Simone_DF , great info. For my shooting I have both apo and classical lenses in M. Chasing better optics is big $$$$ with Leica and they are good at staying one step ahead of most other lens manufacturers. The difficulty often-times is determining when good enough has been reached and will the new lens make a significant difference optically.

I’ll stick to my Sigma 24 f3.5, I’m not really interested in the Leica 21 or 24 Apo, but I hope they’ll get released soon for the people who are looking forward getting one.

Could Leica be waiting for the introduction of the SL3 to release the 21 and/or 24 Apo? Just thinking (wondering) out loud.
TeleElmar135mm Posted July 8, 2023 Share #12 Posted July 8, 2023 The Panasonic are optimized for video (as many reviews told) and the AF-C is better. On the other hand the Sigmas are better in the corners for stills and - a great thing for me - have a aperture ring.

Even Leica has not answered to the threat but there is a little chance that these two lenses come with the SL4

Yet it's exciting to see new products and can we ever get enough whether buying, tempted or simply observing? Leica has an anniversary year approaching, there's many and I can't keep track. 100 years of the first Leica? IIrc, Leica rumors says they will be introducing many products. The leaks that once were like a sieve have been less and less lately, I can remember being told things by Leica reps that on the surface were borderline improbable, yet because it was Leica couldn't be ruled out in their entirety, perhaps they were joking. The "funniest" thing is, that in a youtube(?)-video from a german dealer they showed an working example of the 21mm last year, but then this was never shown again ... I think there was a problem in production or or or .... it has became a mystery tale like sigmas 70-200mm
Malabito Posted July 9, 2023 Share #16 Posted July 9, 2023 I have the pana 24mm f1.8 and use it with a sl2s, (I also have the 24mm Elmar which is an amazing lens on the m10 but not so much on the sl). I like the lens, image quality is not amazing, but is good enough and focuses relatively fast, (sl focusing is horrible so under sl context i would say its great, focuses faster than my sl apo 35mm). Issue with the lens it feels very very plastic, and for 900 euros i would say it's expensive given how plastic it feels, yes it helps keeping the weight down, but perhaps if needed to buy the lens again, given i don't do video, i would go for the sigma 24mm f3.5, its super small, and feels amazing, and image quality is supposed to be very good, (i only played with it for a bit). Here are some images with the sl2s and the pana 24m: Welcome, dear visitor!
