Q3 Min shutter speed and highest ISO - coming from Fuji

Hi y'all

 

First time Leica owner coming over from the Fuji X system. 

 

Something odd is happening. I set my min shutter speed at 1/250 and max ISO at 6400. Yet when taking a picture in aperture priority, at say 250 and ISO 3200. Should it not increase the shutter speed rather than making 1/250 the default? as that's supposed to be the MINIMUM, rather than the default and prioritise that over ISO?

So you expected it to raise the ISO to max in order to bring the shutter speed above what you set as acceptable? I can't remember fuji doing that, but I normally shoot my fuji x-t5 manual with auto iso.

If the light was higher and ISO was already at base the shutter speed would go up to match the light conditions. Also with Leica if you are at the max ISO you set and you don't have enough light for the min shutter speed you set, it will lower the shutter speed bellow min to keep from under exposing the shot. Other systems, Canon for one, would just under expose in that situation. At least all of my other Leica's do that. I don't know about Q3, but expect its the same.

There’s little reason to shoot with a shutter speed faster than 1/250s, especially at 28mm, unless you subject is moving rather fast. If the camera bumped ISO to 6400, you’d loose dynamic range and increase noise. The camera is trying to get you the best image quality possible with the constrains you set.

The Auto ISO Mode raises shutter speed above minimum set only if you are at base ISO in order to prevent overexposure. At ISOs above base, the minimum shutter speed is used in order to have least amount of noise (largest exposure).

Every camera implements it that ways.

Hi acfieldscr, from your description it sounds Leica is programmed the same way Panasonic is, and thanks that's what I am looking for when searching online and find this thread. Honestly, I love this feature when taking picture of my kid running around, one reason I use Lumix cameras.

 

Basically auto ISO takes priority over the minimum shutter speed, the camera will try to raise your shutter speed to your min shutter speed without going over your max ISO limit. So think of these as a two steps process (in aperture priority mode, min shutter only works and makes sense in this mode):

First, the camera will raise your shutter speed to your min shutter setting, then it checks if ISO is hitting the max ISO ceiling.

If not hitting max ISO,  then your min shutter speed is your shutter speed and ISO is adjusted for the correct exposure for the given aperture.

If hitting the max ISO, then it ignores your min shutter speed setting and lower your shutter speed until the correct exposure is obtained for the given aperture.

I must have knocked my shutter dial one notch from 'A' to 1/2000s when I was getting it out of the bag. The photos have come out great to be fair, but apparently that shutter speed is for fast moving birds, which my wife absolutely isn't thankfully...
