Within some days I will do my first long exposure seascapes with the SL2-s.

As my tripod is big, I would need a chair to look through the viewfinder.

So, i could use an external monitor (which would cost 500€ incl. sth to fix it to the tripod) or I could buy an iPad and use Fotos to finetune composition and release the trigger.

what would you suggest? Thanks.

HDMI works well with the SL2 using monitors like the ones from Atomos. Only issue is all of the camera info shown on the camera LCD or EVF won’t show up. So no focus point. I use the Atomos with an adapter to allow it to be mounted on the flash hot shoe. Only issue I have is the large size of the Atomos battery. Mine is several years old and that may have changed now.

Can't you use the Apple HDMI connector to plug into the camera using Leica's HDMI cable?

Just to be clear, I connect via cable to iPad, and can mirror the evf? Without fotos?

Do you have a smart phone with the latest version Leica FOTOS app?

I haven't captured long exposure with either the Fotos app or the SL2 to confirm. I think you should be able to experiment with the Fotos app Remote feature on your smartphone to see if using the Fotos app might be a solution before spending on the iPad or external monitor. No cable needed.

for this situation, I am using CaptureOne software with a tether pro cable orange connected to my Microsoft surface pro folded over as a tablet.   I do like the control C1 provides by tethering.

there is some type of large update scheduled for capture one and iPad tomorrow ... perhaps that update includes wireless connection from camera to ipad.

this video will define he details of the update.

I have not read every prior response, but I just use my iPhone, not connected to the camera, and feel an iPad would probably be better, if the size is OK with what you’re dealing with.

Looks great! This would be an advantage over LR.

My experience with Fotos is that it is not stable enough: may be because I have three camera connections, and maybe I should disable all except the SL.

I have used the FOTOS app since it was a subscription. I have improved quite a bit, but I think the team never talked to a photographer that uses it. It has many flows.

I have 3 SL2 cameras and others and the connection issue is always a challenge, besides the fact that it is impossible to label them and keep them apart.

Capture one for IOS is a fantastic addition and allows remote shooting. At this time it does not offer a live view for framing or focusing. but capture get the raw image into the iPad in 5sec. So you can take one photos, quickly adjust and take another.

it is a subscription, I typically pay the $5 for the 30 days and cancel, if I need it for another job I just pay another $5 ( less money for coffee)

I would suggest getting a gear head on your tripod so that you can make precise adjustments.

I am sorry to hear your Fotos connection is not stable. Are you running the latest Fotos app, camera, and device firmware? Also, if you've updated your camera firmware and/or Leica Fotos app did you reset the camera after the firmware update process ( sometimes I find this can help solve such issues), same with uninstalling and then reinstalling the Fotos app on your devices.

I've recently been testing the SL2+ Fotos app both iOS and iPadOS apps all on the latest firmware. Very impressed with Fotos stability/connectivity even when my device falls asleep the Fotos app remains connected throughout. I am also testing the new Q3 battery on my SL2 which includes long durations with the Fotos app scenarios again with iPad and iPhone. Still in the process of testing the Q3 battery, but so far so good and as I mentioned Fotos app connectivity has been very good--not one disconnect so far.

Likewise I plan to test the Fotos App, iPhone, SL2 with some long exposure scenarios too. However, so far using the Fotos Remote app for portrait work has been very stable and reliable as well. I particularly like being able to AirDrop full size DNG images from the tripod mounted camera rig to iPhone Fotos app to my Mac computer and 27" display. Again, no cables needed for a very stable connection.

*I have noticed that if I fail to properly disconnect the camera from the Fotos app, this can sometimes result in some failed attempts to reconnect the SL2 and Fotos app e.g., instead of connection on the normal first attempt, I may have to go through 2 or 3 connections attempts and then back in business. But thesis again when I don't properly disconnect the Fotos app.

I don't think you can use an HDMI cable to use an iPhone or iPad as a monitor. The adapter Apple sells is designed to connect the device to an external monitor.

If you don't want to go down the expensive Atamos route you could try this "  Accsoon SeeMo HDMI to USB Monitoring Adapter for iPhone/iPad

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BGC1ZSG9/?coliid=I1TVRMME7IQFKG&colid=14CDJ8CJH1770&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Available from Amazon though the delivery time seems to be quite long.

Sony and Feelworld also make smallish HDMI monitors designed to used as external camera monitors

what is the benefit? it doesn't record the camera setting on the screen, it would be just a video feed. For that you just need a recorder like atomos, but with video out some settings in AF are not all active
