LeicaQ3 Posted June 3, 2023 Share #1 Posted June 3, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I thought this was a fluke, but it's happened 4 times since I acquired my Q3 last week. Sometimes when I turn my Q3 off, it doesn't actually power off. The screen stays on and the buttons are completely unresponsive. Even if I turn the power switch back to the on position the Q3 remains unresponsive. When it locks up like this, turning the power switch on/off does nothing and the screen won't actually turn off until I eventually remove the battery. My battery has drained completely several times due to this issue because I thought the camera was off, but actually remained on. This has caused me to be a bit paranoid and remove the battery just to ensure it's actually off now. Everything else about the Q3 has been simply amazing so I consider this issue to be a minor inconvenience, but I hope it is resolved soon.

DBounce Posted June 3, 2023 Share #4 Posted June 3, 2023 (edited) Pull the battery and toggle the power switch. Then with it in the on position, depress the shutter button. That will cause a hard reset. Edited June 3, 2023 by DBounce

KrizyManiac Posted June 5, 2023 Share #6 Posted June 5, 2023 This has happened to me on my Q2. Removing the battery fixed the problem.
HeftyPhotos Posted June 10, 2023 Share #7 Posted June 10, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is crazy, this has happened to me like 10x. It actually ruined my planned photography day today because as I was getting ready to leave, I realized my Q3 is completed dead....ridiculous. DBounce Posted June 11, 2023 Share #8 Posted June 11, 2023 I took some pictures with my Q3 and they didn’t get recorded at all. Shortly thereafter, the camera locked up and I had to perform the hard reset. This lockup happened 5 times. This is a pretty bad showing for the Q3 imo. jaapv Posted June 11, 2023 Share #9 Posted June 11, 2023 A good idea as a temporary workaround might be not to shut the camera off manually (there is probably a timing error when writing to the SD card), but to use auto-shutoff.
LeicaQ3 Posted June 11, 2023 Author Share #10 Posted June 11, 2023 Just an update - Leica support asked about my memory card and I mentioned that I was using a Sony Tough M V60. The rep said that they used Sandisk Extreme Pro cards while testing the Q3 and that particular card worked well for them. I purchased a SanDisk 256GB Extreme PRO V90 UHS-II SDXC Memory Card the next day and haven't experienced this issue since. I'm not sure if the Sony Tough brand itself was the culprit or the slower read/write speed, but I've been able to power off my Q3 reliably since switching memory cards. 3
Qwertynm Posted June 11, 2023 Share #11 Posted June 11, 2023 (edited) I use this exact card since launchday and haven’t had issues like you describe. I had one lock up but that was probably due to me pressing the playbutton too soon aftrt boot up Edited June 11, 2023 by Qwertynm
Tobers Posted June 11, 2023 Share #12 Posted June 11, 2023 Memory card issues can cause problems like this. However, I'd expect Leica to have good error management/recover in their software so that if, for example, a write to card function hung up, the software would time out and handle the error accordingly. I'm an ex-programmer btw. I had a similar hang with my Q3. I reported it using the Customer Service option in the Fotos app, and they were very fast to respond which is great to see. Hopefully your card swap has sorted the problem.

Is this just a known problem, and avoided simply by not touching play too soon? Edited June 13, 2023 by jplotkin

GMC Posted July 3, 2023 Share #16 Posted July 3, 2023 I have the same issue. However, it only happens following a connection with the Leica app.
MindsEye Posted July 20, 2023 Share #17 Posted July 20, 2023 I have had the same issue a few times with my Q3. I talked to Leica support today and they promised to report it. They also told me a firmware update is due out in 2-3 weeks. They didn't explicitly say this would fix it. The only "known" (by Leica USA tech support anyway) freezing problem to date on the Q3 is that wireless connections may cause it, similar to what @GMC mentions above. The Leica tech said to be sure turn off the wireless connection in the Fotos app before turning off the camera. In my case it seems to occasionally freeze just when turning off the camera with the on/off switch. I'll pay closer attention now but clearly, from the comments here, it's not an isolated incident.
Nick_London Posted July 20, 2023 Share #18 Posted July 20, 2023 I have had the same powering off issue on several occasions. I have the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC Card 64GB 300MB/s. I think Leica attempting to point the finger of blame at the memory card is a red herring. The power off issue in my case was well after any data transfer had been completed.
MindsEye Posted July 20, 2023 Share #19 Posted July 20, 2023 I have forwarded this stream to Leica support in the U.S. (New Jersey). It is probably best for any users having this issue to get it recorded/reported with Leica. I'm not sure I buy the only-tested-with-one-brand-and-model-SD-card either. I've been rotating cards among 2 Sandisk Extreme Pro 300MB/sec. cards, and 4 different Kingston Canvas React Plus cards of various capacities. @LeicaQ3, did the rep you spoke to say how he/she knows what cards were used for testing? Does he/she work with or have access to the engineers testing the cameras in Wetzlar? It's possible that information may not even be available to reps in the field and your rep was perhaps speculating or passing on some here-say (?) I believe it is unlikely that camears are tested with only one brand and model of SD card. Not impossible, but seems unlikely.

Not impossible, but seems unlikely. @MindsEye I communicated with the technical manager for Leica, not a customer service rep, so I trust the information he provided. It turns out that the new memory card only resolved the issue temporarily, though. After a week of no freezes, the problem started up again despite the new, faster SD card. I, like other Q3 owners, am now waiting for new firmware to permanently resolve the issue.
