Got an answer on this from Leica in the UK.  DOF preview works fine in AFs but not in AFC or the new iAF mode.  I've tried this with my Q3 and Q2M and can confirm this is correct.

"If you press Shutter Release the aperture closes and the DoF increases. But only with AFs!

With AFc and iAF there is no DoF preview, because the camera always uses open aperture for refocusing.

Should be the same for Q2 and Q3 (except that Q2 has no iAF)"

Thank you for this!

Perfect timing as I was going to email my U.S. Leica contact and ask if it makes a difference which AF mode is being used. I would still prefer to have it in AFC mode. No reason not to have it even if the camera stays wide open to focus. But I suppose if it operates the same as Q2 then Leica isn't likely to change it.

Still anxiously awaiting mine- I'm next on the list now 😃

Happy shooting,

Joel

I got my Q3 today. I see DoF preview in iAF mode.

Now that I finally own a Q3 I tested the DOF preview. My observation is that it only works with AFs or manual focus. When set on iAF or AFc it does not function.

@kirkmc, what is your firmware version? I don't see it working in iAF mode.

Thanks

Actually, DOF preview is kind of silly and useless. Your DOF will depend on the size of your print (computer screen), viewing distance and crop. What you see in the viewfinder will rarely match the final result.

In macro mode it makes a bigger difference.  I would find it very helpful.

I never saw much difference in DOF in macro photography. . I would qualify it as narrow irrespective of aperture.

I’m not referring to true macro, only using macro mode on the Q3 where I need to be closer than the non-macro mode 30cm minimum focus distance.

A year later... and I finally figured out why I can't see any difference when in iAF... 😐

Glad the mystery is solved! Hopefully Leica can update the DOF preview with firmware but not holding my breath
