Can someone with experience with Rom R lenses explain the typical controls when using these lenses with the latest Leica adapter on an SL2 or SL2-s?

Can you have full aperture control from the camera in all modes - PASM?  If so do you set the aperture ring to f16/22?

I was looking at an apo 100 macro, 180 summicron, or 400 2.8, in particular… thanks for explaining any limitations.

The Leica L→R adapter transmits the focal length of the ROM lens and its maximum aperture.  That's all.

There is no control from the camera at all.  The connection is electronic only, and even then only one-way to read the ROM chip information in the lens.

Am uncertain if the R lens ROM information is used for any baked-in image correction on RAW images (like it is for some M lenses).

The nice thing about the Leica L→R adapter however is that (1) it is very well made and infinty on the lens is true infinity and (2) it records the exact focal length used for the shot when using Zoom R lenses.

The latter of course won't help you much for your proposed lens selection 😃

Hello Robb,

i have the SL2 with the R Adapter L and the apo 100 Macro and the apo telyt r 2,8/400 non module, you can only use A or M, not P or S Programm. You see not the correct aperture in the Exif.

But it make very fun to use these lenses on the SL2, an the quality is in my opinion very good !

When you have this r lenses, my advice, buy the adapter and use these unusual lenses on the SL2.

Best regards

Christian

Yes, I think the added value for the original Leica addaptors (M and R) is rather limited.

Any good adapter from URTH or Novoflex or similar will do the same. There is one thing that is not mentioned yet. Even though Leica allows you to choose your lens profile (M or R ) on any adapter, it seems that the EXIF info will always show "unknown lens" no matter what on all third party adapters and it shows the chosen profile with native Leica adapters. This is IMO a cheap decision from Leica to add 'value' for their own products.

I do have the Leica R to L adapter, simply it's terrific.

Now with Rom lenses attached you can only use M or A.

In (A) mode with Rom lenses, set your aperture manually, the camera will select the speed as well as the ISO when in Auto mode.

You can also adjust the speed manually by turning the front dail, also the lens profile and IBIS is activated.

In (M) mode you select the Aperture and Speed, if ISO is in Auto it will adjust to the lighting conditions.

Also the lens profile and IBIS remain activated.

I can truly state the my R lenses work better on my SL2-S than they ever did on my R cameras, it's the best Leica Camera that I have ever owned.

Ken.

I’ve fallen in love with the R F4 zooms.  The sharpness and unique 70-90s colors are awesome.

yes, the old lenses are great, I use on my SL601 lenses from the 60s (

the #14372 with an lense from 1963

The color brilliance is really more than impressive for the age (wo would have  thought of digital and megapixel cameras at the time)....
