would also like an upgraded IOS unit or IBIS.

What does the current OIS not do for you that you think it should? Also IBIS would be much more complicated and would likely require a bigger body for the camera.

If you want corner to corner sharpness on an image with a flat plane with a little or low DOF, the Q3 needs 1/50 for sharp consistent results. I’d like results Atleast around 1/15.

OIS has nothing to do with it, nor has IBIS. The28mm lens was designed around software correction. If you want to pay twice as much for pure optical correction then buy an M with 35 or 50 ‘chron lens.

You clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. You clearly ignored what I wrote and then started talking about lens performance. lol. This has nothing to do with lens performance. My lens is very sharp in the corners. To realize that corner sharpness you have to shoot at 1/50 or faster when shooting handheld. This is 100% related to stabilization.

With a smaller lens, please.

They have already made so many compromises to make the Q3 lens so tiny I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect it to be any smaller. The only way to make it smaller at this point would be to make the lens a F2.8 which honestly I would have zero interest in and I suspect no one else would either.

Then I clearly misunderstood what you were talking about. Sorry.

I haven’t seen a camera with OIS or IBIS that can shoot as low as 1/15th without camera shake. I’m not even sure how you could accomplish that without making the lens or the camera much bigger, Most people simply shoot at a higher shutter speed or use a tripod.

I agree that Leica gave a priority to size and weight over having the best stabilization. I think by the time the Q4 comes out it will be possible to put a better unit in the camera. The Fuji X100VI coming out soon will have IBIS and it will only be 1mm thicker, so it’s possible.

Hi, you can also use a gimbal, which makes it much bigger, but it works very good and make images sharp and if you mover the move smooth.

Putting in IBIS would radically change the design of the camera and not for the better I suspect. OIS is already built into the lens and shutter mechanism which is integrated into the camera itself, so why go the significant cost of moving from this system to IBIS when the camera only has a 28mm lens? And remember the X100 has managed perfectly well without OIS or IBIS for 5 generations and only those who wear features like Boy Scout badges for bragging really care.

There you go. Shot with an old Sony A7RII in 2017, handheld, f/4 at 1/6s

100% crop of corner

More modern cameras like the Panasonic S5II are even more effective.

Apparently the Fuji X100VI will have IBIS too.

But it's unlikely we'll see IBIS in the Q, it would mean a redesign of the lens, which wouldn't be a bad thing, to be honest.

I agree with Le Chef that the OIS built into the lens most probably will be the way it stays for the Q-system (just better and more refined in Q4). I also think that the Q4 might take on a curved sensor tech so that the lens, at least in theory could get smaller/ligther (if staying the same at F/1.7) while getting some nice benefits like less optical aberrations, improved corner sharpness and lessen software lens corrections, but also the opportunity to make a new lens the same size as now but with a more light gathering F/1.4. Just my own thoughts!

No doubt you did it, but how much was you and how much was the camera?

I’m also intrigued by the seemingly arbitrariness of OIS or IBIS to 1/6th second requested by another poster - why that number and not lower?

You're all talking of your wish list for the Q4.   All I'd like is for the firmware on my unit to work better.....  Set up a profile and save it.  Then change on item whilst using that profile and all the fn buttons revert to factory settings.  Tried speaking to Leica with no luck...... So forget about the Q4 till they get the Q3 working correctly.

Just checked this on my Q3.

Steps taken

  • set up a profile "Kleur"
  • assigned Perspective Control to Fn2 Button 2
  • saved this a profile "Kleur"
  • set to different profile with default for Fn Button 2
  • set back to profile "Kleur"
  • change focus area

Fn Button 2 still controls Perspective Control. So I can't reproduce the behaviour where the Fn Buttons revert to defaults when changing a setting during using a profile. I haven't changed the camera setup during the last week or so and I certainly would have noticed when Fn buttons would revert to the factory defaults.

Sorry if I am repeating a previous post but for me, a perfect Q4 would simply allow me to mount legacy lenses!  I have a Ricoh GRX with a sensor module that allows M lenses!  I used that setup before moving to the Q and then Q2.  For me, the Q2 is perfect, but I would really like to change lens now and then.  Really don’t care for the Q3 tilt screen at the expense of rearranging the rear buttons with which I am very comfortable.

Sadly it's never going to happen without blowing up what currently exists.

As said many times before: the lens is built-in - there is no mount, the shutter is built into the lens - there is no traditional separate shutter curtain set back in the body of the camera, the sensor is optimally sited to match the fixed lens and built-in shutter mechanism, OIS is built in to the lens.

If you want an ILC camera then you can ask Leica to build an M lookalike with an M-mount and a built-in EVF, or you can buy an SL2/3 which uses the L-mount and can take M lenses with an adaptor.
