Leica Q4 - wish list

Recommended Posts

Genoweffa, your proposal for the Q4 has already been achieved for the most part, it's called the Q2.  If we are going to define the next potential goal shouldn't we try out the current one first?

I will try and contribute as soon as I get my Q3 in hand and learn how to take advantage of this new version.

Thank you

Wireless charging is optional via the grip. I don’t know how you can remove an optional feature that doesn’t exist if you didn’t buy the grip. There’s negligible marginal cost increase for adding 3 electrical contacts and about $5-10 worth of electronic circuitry to protect against things like ESD, over current, and reverse voltage.

Ok crowd....now we know all about Q3, it is high time to start Q4 wish list...take stab

Me first..

1.remove folded screen

2.remove dock charging

3.lower the price 😀

Yup, it's called a Q2 and should be available used for far less than the Q3. Problem solved!

Did I say remove 60 sensor?

Did I say remove UBC-C?

Did I say remove new AF?

Did I say remove external cable release?

Did I say remove better EVF?

Did I say remove better processor?

I have 2xQ2...they don't have the above..how did you draw such a conclusion?

35, 40 or 50 mm  summilux or summicron lens

512 gb or 1 tb internal storage

no SD card at all

better EVF

remove or hide video options

play button = optional functions (play by default)

AVIF format instead pf JPG

256Gb internal storage in addition to the SD

joystick

more refined implementation of the flip screen (I’m glad they added it)

Native 36Mp is enough, but keep improving the sensor dynamic range for higher ISO. I want to shoot at night at F4

35mm lens would be great, but I know it ain’t gonna happen

I would give up a stop in lens speed for compactness and weight savings.

35mm APO-Summicron-Q ASPH

40MP full frame CCD sensor

Black Paint over brass body

I know the current 28 Lux-Q is not APO but from a focal length, resolution, depth of field perspective, it is equivalent to a 35/2.0 with 40 MP full frame. Meaning if you had a 40MP full frame sensor with a 35mm f/2.0 lens of the same design, it would be pretty much identical in depth of field to selecting the 35mm crop mode with a 60MP FF sensor on the current Q3.

Actually, I'm going to go one step further. I own the Q2 and I think the Q1 in many respects (minus the battery) was a better camera for my uses.

Yeah, how so? How is the Q a better camera for your uses?  Is the Autofocus on the Q2 better then the Q?

I own the Q and love it. I also have the Q2M and am equally happy with that. I'm considering trading in my Q towards a used Q2, but I'm not sure yet. I'm coming up on a good time to do that though since I'm sure there will be a large inventory of used Q2 cameras as people get the Q3.

The main thing I would like the Q2 for is the weather proofing (on the Q2M it's great - all day in the rain and no problems, I'm assuming the Q2  is the same). The larger sensor would be nice but not really that necessary honestly.

If I had a Q3 I’d have to rip off that darn ugly flippy screen, ugh. But perhaps it could be made removable, so you’d be able to leave it behind and use the camera as a Q3D?

I’d also prefer a 35mm equiv. lens FOV. But I’ll likely not be in the market for such an expensive camera until I’m ready to give up on my other Leica M mount lenses.

How on earth could you expect me to respond to a long list of things you did not say? Ridiculous - I responded to the very short list of things you did say. What I said was also quite lighthearted and meant to be in good fun; perhaps you missed that while you were typing your snarky response.

And, to address your list specifically... I side with those who disagree with your first 2 items; the first is a long awaited upgrade and the second is an optional accessory that anyone can choose not to buy.

As to point #3; perhaps all of us would like a lower price, but frankly the fact that the Q3 is only $200USD more at launch than the very successful Q2 is actually a surprisingly low price. Consider the very large recent price increases from some of the other manufacturers for their latest cameras compared to the model just prior - in some cases they have jumped up from ~$3-4k to over $5k (Sony and Nikon for example) ... Leica did the opposite and held to a very modest price increase.

So, to me, your list is 0 for 3 tries. I will wait until I have been able to use the Q3 for awhile before I form an opinion on what I may want for a future Q4.

I think I’d go farther than this. Sony charges $3900 for a body with the same sensor (a7R v) without a lens included. Add a 24mm f/1.4 GM which is the closest thing to the 28mm f/1.7, and you’re at $5300 which is only $700 shy of the Q3. The Sony setup weighs 1160g, almost 2/3rds more than the Q3. I’ll take the Q3 any day.

Another way to look at this is that the Q2 was initially announced with a price of $5000. If you account for inflation between 2019-2023, $5000 in 2019 has the same purchasing power as $5933 today. So really, the Q3 price has not changed at all in real terms, at least relative to everything else that’s also gone up in price.

Even accounting for exchange rates, on launch, the Q2 was $6867 CAD. After adjusting for Canada’s inflation, it is equivalent to $7900 CAD today, which is within $200 CAD of what shops in Canada are charging for a Q3.

The Q2 noise is a real issue for me. Subjectively speaking, my Q images look(ed) more organic. AF? Not a big deal for me. Weather sealing? Same.

25MP is I think the sweet spot for the kind of photos I take -- travel, street, portraiture.

Initially, I was all up for the tiltable screen but I'm not sure it gives you that much more leverage. I suspect it may end up being more of a nuisance or something you hardly ever use. A fully articulating screen would have been functionally better though aesthetically not in keeping with Leica's minimalist styling. It will be interesting to see what the Sony RX1R iii will look like. In design terms, Leica has just caught up with Sony's RX1R mark ii released in 2015.

The way forward is a Q4-S: longer battery life, amazing world-leading ISO performance at 25MP, and an attachable/tiltable EVF viewfinder for those difficult shots.
