I got mine from the great folk at The Classic Camera in London this week. Paid my deposit and one day later received a call to say my camera had arrived.

@rushkyle I am wondering whether the store removes the sales tax? And how much do you need to pay at US customs?

I wouldn’t know for sure but seems unlikely they’d remove VAT for a foreign buyer. Can always ask them though.

I just ordered one there (maybe last one, but it seems new stock is coming at April), and I a wondering how much you paid as UPS import fee?

I didn't order from them, I am just on their list. So far I have gotten alerts three times from them. The most recent one I think was Monday, so that was probably the one you responded to 🙂

On import fee, the US surprisingly doesn't add any when products ship into the US. This is difficult to phantom for an European because in Denmark, as an example, the customs at the national post office will open an envelope if it seem to contain a product (despite laws on privacy), and certainly any boxes with goods in them, and evaluate the value and add what they feel are proper import tax (differs for category, cars are 180%, airplane parts are 3% and so on) + sales tax 25% and a fee of $20 or so for doing the work. (I had a drawing book I sent to my daughter from the US to Denmark, I paid Canadian $30 in an airport store, mailed it and the customs evaluated I she to pay somewhat $100 USD in tax of it to get it delivered - probably because it was a Chanel coloring book :-). So it was left at the post office).

In any case, despite that there is sales tax in most states in the US, around 8-9% usually, not even that is added upon import. A big mystery to me. Nonetheless, it means that if you buy from Europe, they deduct local sales tax, and if the US adds nothing, you basically saved some hundred USD on importing from Europe. Shipping from one state to another there is sometimes sales tax to be added, at other times none. I have tried to get someone to explain the rules for me, and haven't found any reliable source who actually knew the written rules.

Leica, in some countries, have told Leica Stores they cannot export products by mail. You can buy in store and get VAT (sales tax) refunded in the airport, which is usually less returned than the actual sales tax you paid. In Japan the 10% sales tax is deducted in the store so you get the product at a net price (they used to put a note in your passport, but I think that is done electronically now), saving time in the airport as you don't have to be in a line. I Australia I've seen people stand 1-2 hours in line to get their sales tax refunded.

When you enter your home country where you live, you are supposed to tell the officer if you bring any goods to declare.

As a generalization, this is not accurate. US customs will levy import duties and taxes. For example import a watch strap and if it’s crocodile skin or ostrich then it requires the exporter to issues a Cites certificate and declare that to US customs, who will in turn tax you for the privilege. If you import wine from a European country, say a case, then you will likely pay import duties and taxes.

I have found that customs are inconsistent, both in the EU and the USA. It is the luck of the draw: sometimes they charge exhorbitantly and other times, they let the goods through without levy. Since Brexit I have largely given up importing things from the UK to Austria, as the import costs have been outrageous. A year ago the Austrian customs asked me to prove that a €20 paperback from the UK really cost the declared value, as they didnt believe it. I presented the bill/receipt to prove it. Then the following week I received a three-volume book from the USA that cost $200, and it sailed through customs unchallenged.

Right... US customs only charges a fee if the item is $800 or more.

I was able to get one today from Leica Store NY by just checking after calling them today and they had one in stock. Even Leica store Los Angelos had one in  stock as few hours ago when I checked with them.

Sorry, I was obviously unclear: the books were coming from the USA to the EU. The threshold for EU customs charges is considerably lower than $800, as shown by my example of the €20 book I imported from the UK.

My tactic when 'smuggling' illicit camera gear into the UK is to dispose of all boxes and carry the camera on its strap like an old friend.  After all you were on a trip and took your camera with you when you left your home country didn't you?  Then you are likely safe from the taxman and the other half - "no dear, not new, I've had this ages, I'd show you the box it came in, but you threw them out with the recycling, remember?" (yes my wife does that - I had to rescue the box for my old Q2 from the recycling for trade in...
