My first M2 (purchased second hand) had the counter ring so rough to reset that I leave it at the set number when I changed film.

At it's first CLA, I talked to the repairer/technician to learn that some dust can cause that.

Since then, once in a while, I clean under the shutter and under the counter ring with a piece of paper passing once or twice.

After that, I save my nails and some trouble.

I don't know about the indicator itself, but the reset mechanism does seem to be very prone to fail, if the number of people who report having issues with it on this forum is anything to go by.

It's not the reset mechanism that fails.  Leica, in its inestimable genius, uses a plastic gear in the later film Ms in the film counter mechanism. They saved maybe a nickel per camera.... This is prone to cracking, and when it does, the counter no longer fails to operate properly.  I think this is from the M6 and later cameras (6, 7, P, A).  Maybe also the M4-2/P, not sure.

It failed in my MP, but was an easy fix and techs are used to this.  Still cost $180 to fix and a few weeks w/o the camera.

If you move the M2 advance lever to the half cocked position, it unlocks the frame counter wheel and it turns with no resistance.

👍

Right spot on.

The counter ring can move in the two directions smoothly without clic ...

When this happens, can they replace that gear with a metal one?
