Taking photos of strangers is usually rewarding in a photographic sense but last Friday it was both educational and uplifting.

I met this lovely lady on her way to a health seminar.  I asked her about her outfit and she told me that it was a nod towards the Pre-Raphaelites,  a group of English painters, poets, and art critics, founded in England in 1848.  She also mentioned one of the group's contemporaries, a painter named George Frederick Watts.  I knew a little about this man, there is a art gallery quite near to where I live that contains much of his work and named after the man himself.  I mentioned that one of his most famous works, titled 'Hope' was one of the most miserable that I had ever seen - see below.

Seated on what looks like the Earth, she is blind and the lyre she is holding is in tatters, Fiona explained to me what 'Hope' is all about.  Everything is broken but closer examination reveals that one lyre string remains. This last intact string of Hope's instrument is a message that here is always something that we can cling to when all else appears to be lost.  Fiona's explanation was far more eloquent that mine and was a strong reminder to examine photographs and art with far greater care and thought than is my custom

Lovely portrait of an interesting character with a great attitude.

Nice how the background was so complimentary to her attire.

Thank you Brent, in that part of London there's not much wall space that hasn't been sprayed with an aerosol can.  Lovely when it works in your favour.
