Wineman Posted May 23, 2023 Share #1 Â Posted May 23, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just picked up the first version, the "Made by Leitz" version made for the CL. Then I read some internet threads that this particular lens version may not be compatible with some M bodies due to the cam design, the later model lens made for the CLE improved this. After testing out this lens I'm happy to report that it works just fine with my M4. No focus issues. A tiny bit soft wide open and a tiny bit lower contrast than a more modern lens. But really a great performer for a 50 year old inexpensive lens. Such a good, compact lens for the money.
Advertisement Posted May 23, 2023 Posted May 23, 2023 Hi Wineman, Take a look here Minolta M-Rokkor 90mm F4 on M body. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted May 23, 2023 Share #2 Â Posted May 23, 2023 (edited) The Rokkor 90/4 for Minolta CL It is a clone of the Elmar-C 90/4 for Leica CL with different filters. Both have a sloped focus cam contrary to the later version for Minolta CLE. Never got focus issues with the Elmar-C so far, be it on film or digital. Thank you for confirming the same behavior on the early Rokkor. Edited May 23, 2023 by lct
TomB_tx Posted May 23, 2023 Share #3 Â Posted May 23, 2023 (edited) I agree - I use the Elmar-C version on both film and digital, and it gives wonderful images. I also have the Summarit 90 2.5 and the Tele-Elmarit (fat) that I bought in 1968, and the Elmar-C is the equal (except at f2.8). The Elmar-C is a total bargain. Thanks for the reminder - a post got me looking at the VM APO Skopar - but with the ones I have you saved me some money. lct Posted May 23, 2023 Share #4 Â Posted May 23, 2023 Excerpt of the Leica leaflet 120-5O/Engl (attached): Quote Screw-mounted LEICA lenses and lenses for the LEICA M models have a differential helical focusing movement, i.e. the rear focusing barrel bearing against the rangefinder coupling roller moves only in and out. For a more compact and lightweight design, the 40mm SUMMICRON-C f/2 and 90mm ELMAR-C f/4 for the LEICA CL have instead a direct rear focusing cam. These lenses can be mounted on the LEICA M, but do not provide precise coupling with the rangefinder. For this reason we do do not recommend using the CL lenses on the LEICA M cameras. TomB_tx Posted May 23, 2023 Share #5 Â Posted May 23, 2023 I know the caution Leitz gave about the 90-C, but mine has perfect focus on my M4,5,6,9 & 10.
