So as an update, turns out I'm blind. Got a pair of glasses and tried to nail focus at f1.4 with and without them and the results have been pretty revealing. RF seems totally fine in terms of alignment - just my eyes were not :) I consistently got these results over multiple shots (and certainly the RF patch is easier to see sharply now).

Sigh...the joys of aging. I've found I rarely wear the glasses (mostly for reading), but I suppose I can get a +1.0 diopter for the viewfinder? I have a very low prescription at the moment.

Focusing on the Moog logo - without glasses at f1.4 with the 35mm.

Well, you’ve apparently chosen the appropriate user name.

Be sure that your eyes are corrected for astigmatism.  Leica branded diopters correct for distance.  They are easy to test either through a dealer or using trial diopters from your local optician.

Is the RF mechanism quite sensitive to shakes or air travel?

No. It takes a hefty blow or tooh-jarring vibration to get it out of calibration.
