Hello

I finally bought a bulk loader (AP as the picture here ) and a 100Ft HP5 roll

Regarding cannisters... Are there different designs or are they all the same?   What type of canister you have found the easiest to use?  I have my eye on these ones also by AP:

Any tips on the whole process will also be appreciated as I need to buy them and get this 100ft pre-loaded this week

Thanks

  • grahamc changed the title to Which re-usable 35mm Cannister's? Any other AP bulk loading tips ?

They look very similar to the ones I use, bought from eBay, & they do work well, but just how secure the velvet light traps will be after multiple uses I'm not sure. This I have yet to find out.

Hi mate, nice loader btw! Congrats on yout HP5+ purchase 😂😂😂

yeah that plastic canister will do just fine, only the felt might deteriorate easily but no worries, still using them after some good couple of years though sometimes i might worry of a leak..

i mainly use the old metal kodak canister bought off ebay

I've only been bulk loading for a few years; and have gone through a few hundred rolls. this is what i've concluded.

(1) plastic and metal are similar. they both have a tendency to have the cap twist or snap off at random in opportune moments. They are not single use; but they are not buy it for life either; meaning you cannot reload them indefinitely. Look carefully at the felt trap, keep an eye out for it wearing out. When you feel uncomfortable with the amount of felt coming off in your fingers, it is time to retire that film canister. The felt does come off a little too easily for my tastes. I think the metal ones are a bit more durable, but they are more likely to have the cap snap off. The plastic ones can potentially brush against something, like the side of my pants, which will put enough tension on the top for cap to fly off. With both plastic and metal, care if highly recommended.

(2) I prefer the more economical approach. I go into one of the film development labs and ask them if they have any unused canisters. I grab a bag and use those to reload. I also like to see the different kinds of film everyone is getting developed. It doesn't cost anything because the labs give them to me for free. The only caution is to be careful to not over-reuse the film canisters which can scratch the film.  I've been lucky so far.

(3) The most expensive option. Find Ixmoos and use a M2 or M3 baseplate. These are buy it for life. Reuse them as many times as you want. The hard part is finding them. It is also expensive. It is also often confused with the Filca Canisters which don't fit in the leica M camera system. These have to be loaded in a dark changing bag, your bulk loader doesn't have the adapters to open and close the canister. These look so cool and work great.

This has been discussed before. Search the forum for “FILCA” to read lots of postings.

If you cannot use FILCA or IXMOO cassettes then use plastic reusable ones. I have a load of Jessops ones. Look out on eBay for them if you are in the UK.
