This is surprisingly easier to do than remove that @#$*& retaining ring.
Advertisement Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Hi Huss, Take a look here Changing the film advance lever on the new M6. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

I'm sure you can buy 45 degree corrective gearing, and reshape the body with resin filler. My solution? I have a MP and a M4. Are you going to replace the lever in the M4? p.s. already have an MP. And M-A. I much prefer the feel of the advance lever on those than on the M6.

That, and the MP is the black paint version🙂. Edited April 23, 2023 by LocalHero1953

I sometimes wonder why Leica makes it in the chrome version, as the BP is far more popular, it is the one that is always sold out, and on the used market it fetches higher prices. Give the people what they want, just make it in BP.

That's why I waited for chrome for my M10. Chrome "seems" to stay new looking longer. I still miss real chrome on cars too.

There is a big difference between the chrome on, for example an M3, and the chrome on my M10r. My M3's chrome, now after 60+ years, is brighter and cleaner than my very much newer M10r. With both I just wipe them occasionally with a micro fiber cloth.
Huss Posted April 28, 2023 Author Share #27 Posted April 28, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok, I sucked it up, decided the camera was not going to be the boss of me, and did it! It is just very very tight, but then it gives, and everything is right with the world. The MP/M-A/M3 style lever is so much nicer and more solid feeling to use. Welcome, dear visitor! Interesting, my M7s have a black retaining ring while yours is chrome. I wonder if it was a change made later in production since mine are higher serial numbers. Huss Posted May 1, 2023 Author Share #31 Posted May 1, 2023 I ordered the MP style levers for my M5 and M7s. Now that I compare, I really don't like the hinged levers, have no idea why Leica did it, and don't think any other mfg uses hinged levers. The MP style makes the wind on feel rock solid, exudes that sense of quality you expect. The hinged lever in comparison feels like you are using a disjointed thumb.. I am most curious to see how the M5 feels with it, as the camera itself already feels so different to any other M. I sense good things coming! Hey, Always up for a challenge😁 Nikon EM came to mind and probably FG/FG20 - those were cost saving measures. Leica must have had other reasons. There must be others? I love the MP-style winders, but I recently discovered a benefit to the hinged lever. Not sure why it never occurred to me to do this with my M4-P, but better late than never I guess. When shooting, I position the plastic part of the lever outward and keep my thumb there. This allows me to advance the film from the zero position more easily than having to grab the lever by the nub on either style lever. Welcome, dear visitor! Another great new M6 mod: remove that ugly base plate protector and even uglier black sticker. That protective plastic thing makes the camera slide around on a smooth tabletop like the puck in an air hockey game.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Eh, MP style can do that do, but w/o that flimsy old man knuckle cracking feel. 😜
Huss Posted May 1, 2023 Author Share #35 Posted May 1, 2023 What you will also notice is the thicker plastic tip rubs against the body, leaving that mark. The MP lever is narrower and does not touch the body. Another win.

It can do this in the closed position and remain ready. But yeah, it's neither here nor there really.
