Do you like the M6 rewind crank, or will this eventually end up as the MP you could have bought instead? 🙂

I am scraping off the stock paint as we speak and will replace with shiny black paint.

This is surprisingly easier to do than remove that @#$*& retaining ring.

After you've fixed the advance lever, you need to fix the rewind knob.
I'm sure you can buy 45 degree corrective gearing, and reshape the body with resin filler.

My solution? I have a MP and a M4.

Are you going to replace the lever in the M4?

p.s. already have an MP. And M-A.  I much prefer the feel of the advance lever on those than on the M6.

No - I'm happy with both. It's why I bought the MP, not M6, in January, so I could pick and choose on the day. That, and the MP is the black paint version🙂.

Nice, my MP is the bp too.  I sometimes wonder why Leica makes it in the chrome version, as the BP is far more popular, it is the one that is always sold out, and on the used market it fetches higher prices.  Give the people what they want, just make it in BP.

I guess there are enough old timers like me who started photography from the 1950s-60s era when fine cameras were chrome. That's why I waited for chrome for my M10. Chrome "seems" to stay new looking longer. I still miss real chrome on cars too.

There is a big difference between the chrome on, for example an M3, and the chrome on my M10r.  My M3's chrome, now after 60+ years, is brighter and cleaner than my very much newer M10r.  With both I just wipe them occasionally with a micro fiber cloth.

Ok, I sucked it up, decided the camera was not going to be the boss of me, and did it!  It is just very very tight, but then it gives, and everything is right with the world.

The MP/M-A/M3 style lever is so much nicer and more solid feeling to use.

Interesting, my M7s have a black retaining ring while yours is chrome.  I wonder if it was a change made later in production since mine are higher serial numbers.

I ordered the MP style levers for my M5 and M7s.  Now that I compare, I really don't like the hinged levers, have no idea why Leica did it, and don't think any other mfg uses hinged levers.  The MP style makes the wind on feel rock solid, exudes that sense of quality you expect.  The hinged lever in comparison feels like you are using a disjointed thumb..

I am most curious to see how the M5 feels with it, as the camera itself already feels so different to any other M.  I sense good things coming!

Hey, Always up for a challenge😁

Nikon EM came to mind and probably FG/FG20 - those were cost saving measures. Leica must have had other reasons.

There must be others?

I love the MP-style winders, but I recently discovered a benefit to the hinged lever. Not sure why it never occurred to me to do this with my M4-P, but better late than never I guess. When shooting, I position the plastic part of the lever outward and keep my thumb there. This allows me to advance the film from the zero position more easily than having to grab the lever by the nub on either style lever.

Another great new M6 mod: remove that ugly base plate protector and even uglier black sticker. That protective plastic thing makes the camera slide around on a smooth tabletop like the puck in an air hockey game.

Eh, MP style can do that do, but w/o that flimsy old man knuckle cracking feel.

😜

You have the lever extended for the hinge style. It can do this in the closed position and remain ready. But yeah, it's neither here nor there really.

You Sir, are CORRECT!  I akshully like it on the EM as it doesn't take away anything from that little plastic nugget.
