profus Posted December 21, 2016 Share #161 Posted December 21, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the clean comparison. Really nice results. Very typical that others talk of poor samples of M lenses, instead of accepting that the new Summilux SL is an extraordinary lens, with high IQ even at 1.4 . It looks as if the big size has resulted in extraordinary IQ. And the smaller and older M lenses simply are not equal. Exactly as predicted by Karbe. I could easily accept that SL Lux might be (and should be!) better lens than M Lux, but cannot see it is realistic that nothing could even remotely be sharp on all those test images taken with M Lux? Definitely not behavior of my "sample" Or I will put it like this - SL might be superb, but M is no slouch either - on the contrary! I will try to do some tests myself as soon I get a chance, but I am 99,99% sure that differences would be minor...

Honestly none. Manual focussing lux-M was a breeze thanks to its short throw, the tab, and small lens barrel diameter. The throw and small size made it also easier to focus than the noctilux-M ... In fact I compared the three above lenses also to my cron-M-50 and concluded that I don't need to spend more money as my cron-50 stacked perfectly fine against all other 50s including the huge and heavy lux-SL. These are my impressions. Edited December 21, 2016 by meerec
steppenw0lf Posted December 21, 2016 Share #163 Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) Yes, please show the pictures. And some 100% crops. We all would like to see additional comparisons. Nobody minds if the lenses are equal in IQ at f/1.4 - but currently it simply does not look like it. Until somebody shows the opposite. In this case one image will tell much more than all these vain discussions. Looking at the MTF graphs the Summilux-M Asph shows weaknesses at f/1.4, and even at f/2.8 it is not perfect. For me this is well known and no surprise. Usually it does not matter with the typical portraits or reportage photos taken at f/1.4 . And I agree, for me the Summicron 2/50 is also the "best" 50mm lens for the images I take. (But I prefer the R version). So "the best" depends on the personal preferences. A comparison of the Summilux-SL at 1.4 and 2.0 vs the Apo M 50 could be a much closer match. Would be interesting if anybody could add images for such a comparison. Chaemono Posted December 22, 2016 Share #166 Posted December 22, 2016 I'd like to see some comparisons between the SL-50 and the APO-M 50. Yes, I understand. I'm traveling. I'll try but can't promise to show some pictures comparing the two on the SL by the end of next week.

That said, I appreciate that you'll be taking the time to do this!

YellowBelly Posted December 23, 2016 Share #171 Posted December 23, 2016 having phoned about it appears Leica allocated (allegedly) 2 lenses to the UK .... so the advance delivery is miniscule ... presumably just what was left over from the run for demo purposes. rest will appear in january as indicated. looks like there will be food on the table in the thighslapper household after all ...... instead of just me with a shiny new toy and everyone else looking grumpy, hungry and cold ..... I got one of the two :-) ! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

meerec Posted December 23, 2016 Share #174 Posted December 23, 2016 I have posted many pics, to this very forum, when I started with the SL exactly one year ago before Xmas. Posting here is a chore, sorry. // I'll be slapped again by Pop, the Moderator. Look me up on Flickr, that's where I post most, not here.
Chaemono Posted December 23, 2016 Share #175 Posted December 23, 2016 (edited) A few more from today starting at S1040126. This is such a "baaad" lens. In these light conditions, using the joystick and 1 point AF focusing is fast and precise. The SL operates so fluidly. I love it. https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-ghS8qq/ Edited December 23, 2016 by Chaemono
