Not sure if anyone watched the Red Dot Forum’s M11 Monochrome talk yesterday but there seems to be some subtle hints on when the Q3 could be announced.

First, jump to 5m50s in and they alluded to more stuff coming and Josh is biting his tongue trying to not spill the beans. Leading up to this point, David also mentioned that he was in Leica NJ around late March / early April (2 weeks before the LHSA LSI meeting).

Then at the end at 2h5m, they briefly mention about the next talk where David mentioned something about the ‘16th’ which is a very odd date to drop since they always do the talk on a Saturday. Neither May 16th, nor June 16th, is a Saturday. It’s possible that the embargo date for the Q3 is on the 16th (not sure which month). If the Q3 embargo date is the 16th day of the month, then it could be as early as May 16, or as late as June 16th.

I recall when the Q2 was announced, Leica had provided samples to a number of mainstream tech youtubers. Assuming those content creators were also briefed on the product around the same time, a 6 week period should be sufficient to give the youtubers enough time to plan and make review videos to coincide with the announcement. In this case, May 16th seems like reasonable date and aligns with timing floated by Leica Rumors with a date of mid-May to last week of May.

Why would Leica send out an email last Friday promoting the Q2 through the work of 3 photographers under the idea of “Every Day Carry” if they were about to launch a Q3? Makes no sense.

Because they want to get rid of inventory that will no longer sell quickly once the Q3 gets officially announced? Makes perfect business sense to me.

It is because they are going to launch the Q3 with a 40mm lens ... those who want 28mm have a good solution already 😉

Not the way it works. The piece that was sent out is “slow branding” or brand building.

Any manufacturer knows how much inventory they need to make and how long that inventory will last in the market. After you have stopped making new inventory of an expiring model, and because you are starting up production of a new model and you want to clear inventory you do it with offers and discounts if inventory is still lagging. Look at the SL2/S.

If the Q2 is about to be replaced then Leica stopped production several months ago to prepare production of the Q3. If they’ve done their job properly there should be no Q2 product left in the pipeline.

If Leica decides to keep the Q2 in the lineup, they wouldn't necessarily stop promoting it.
Q3 could be higher megapixel, additional changes and a higher price point. Q2 becomes legacy companion offering, and might look more like a "bargain" by comparison.

It’s been mooted that Leica might do this, but rename the Q2 as the Q-E. This would be in keeping with what they did with the M line. Still, if you were going to change the name to Q-E you wouldn’t promote the Q2 now but would wait until after the Q3 was launched and then, maybe a few months later promote the Q-E.

Or maybe Leica s simply promoting the concept of the Q (any version) as the perfect EDC…

By saying that your are implicitly telling existing Q and Q2 owners that they do not need to upgrade to the Q3.  Would that make sense for Leica, if the rumors are true, a matter of weeks before the Q 3 launches?

If you want to run a “Traveling Light” campaign for the Q family then the best time to do that would be 6-9 months after the launch of the Q3M to lift all Q family models. It also would give you opportunity to talk about Leica’s Certified Pre-Owned program that would include the Q and early Q2 models.

it’s still strange receiving an email campaign for the Q2 when I already own one. Surely Leica’s database marketing people should be targeting CL owners to trade up. Or for SL2 owners to add on a Q2, not current Q2 owners. But to send this campaign to people like me was a waste of money.

Leica is too scared to ask CL owners their opinions;  do you think ditching the system went down well with those who invested in it.

At some point we have to recognize that what’s done is done. It would not be a bad move for Leica to offer CL owners an incentive to trade up. Does Leica want to keep customers or is it happy to replace them with new owners?

I’m hopeful the battery will be compatible with the Q2 and SL bodies and even though the EVF looks identical to the Q2, I’m hopeful they do increase the resolution and color accuracy. It seems like a general refresh/refinement of the popular Q2 with minor tweaks.

I’m somewhat indifferent on the flip-out LCD but boy does it look chunky from the side.

I also just noticed that the Q3 shutter button will now support a soft release which is nice.

doesn't look too bad, probably stronger than a thin one!

are the 3 brass points at the bottom for some kind of nfc charger?

It could equally be the M11M, or the SL3.
