I think it's a 23mm 1.4 which looks very interesting.  Because the lens is being released in Sony, Fuji and L mount there's a fairly big market, just glad they have included L mount and maybe it's a sign that Panasonic or Sigma will at some point bring an Aps-c body.  Also there are some FF users (eg FpL with it's 61mps) that are happy to accept a reduction in resolution from a smaller crop sensor lens.

Sigma will release a new 23mm DC for L- mount.

I wonder as Leica L mount apsc discontinued, what is the point that worth Sigma to release a new DC lens? What are the L mount APSC camera on the market? None.

very odd marketing strategy, WDYT

The point is that the same lens is released also for Sony and Fuji mounts, which has always been Sigma's main APS-C market.

All they have to do is swap the lens mount and change the packaging. The L mount is just an afterthought with zero risks.

several hundred L mount APSC? I was talking about DC for L mount

And? There are a lot of L mount apsc cameras out there that still function and will for a long time.

Nobody sane of mind develops for a dead product line like APS-C for L mount, which currently do not have any body in production (at least that we know of).

Do you see any new Canon EF lens around the corner? Even the previous EF lenses have been discontinued, even though there are millions of Canon cameras around.

Companies develop lenses with a >10 product lifecycle at a very minimum.

All they did was change the mount on a lens they already make for other mounts. I’d call that wise enough to sell more lenses.

I think it would be more effort for Sigma to develop a lens that's not compatible with L-mount, because the firmware already supports it by default. At that point it's just a matter of attaching one of their standard mounts, and stamping "for L-Mount" on the boxes. They don't need to sell thousands, but I'm sure every distributor worldwide will get a few copies, enough to satisfy demand.

I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually saw another APS-C L-mount camera from Sigma or Panasonic. The fp-l is already a great candidate for this lens, if you need something small and fast for walking around.

It may be that Sigma is also hedging its bets on their full-frame Foveon sensor camera. If that can't be done, they may fall back to an APS-C size (which we know is feasible) and release a camera with that sensor format.

But, who really knows?

If I may add on, the arrival of the Sigma 23mm F1.4 has really intrigued my interest. I currently pair the Leica CL with the Sigma 24mm F2 (FF lens), and what's great is the incredible built (i-series in general) and the aperture ring and AF/MF switch.

Do you see the F1.4 bigger aperture of the new 23 more favourable than the AF/MF switch and aperture ring of the 24mm?

I shoot mainly everyday life and the AF/MF switch helps with being ready for times when I need MF fast.

Appreciate your thoughts 🙏🏻

I have an SL2-S and a TL2.  I find the Sigma L mount lenses to be great.  The iSeries lenses (while full frame) are very light and compact and compliment the the TL2 quite well.  Also, the Pano/Lumix L mount lenses are light and very fast.

I went ahead and purchased the Sigma 23mm for my CL. Overall, I like the lens. The main strength is its sharpness which is to be expected from Sigma. The bokeh is slightly busy when focusing at nearer distance.

I purchased the Sigma 23mm f1.4 Contemporary L mount lens on my CL.  These are my observations:

Center: usable at f1.4, sl. sharper at f2.0.

Optimal from f2.8, starts to fall off after f8.0

Corners: usable at f1.4 - approx 1.5-2 stops vignetting at extreme corners,

very good at f 2.0 - 2.8, vignetting starts to fade.

Optimal from f4.0, falls off slightly at f8.0.

The MTF data, found on Sigma's website for f1.4 only, suggests a quite good lens - not surprising for how large the lens is (with the caveat that MTF is not everything!).
