Advertisement Posted March 25, 2023 Posted March 25, 2023 Hi Louis, Take a look here V for victory!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted March 27, 2023 Share #2 Posted March 27, 2023 Excellent shot, but as a Frenchman I'm surprised that you didn't recognize that his hand position is the classic French archer insult, rather than the Churchill victory. His companion seems to be doing it, too.
Louis Posted March 27, 2023 Author Share #3 Posted March 27, 2023 Stuny, thank you very much for the information. I was not aware of the meaning of this sign that I have never learned and used before. These two gentlemen were, I think, involved in the construction of the music festival area and passing in a tiny car. When they saw me with my camera, they very kindly saluted me with their “V” signs and I was too close to have both in frame. This is a real problem when shooting in the street that we had a discussion about it before in another post. Most of my shots during this festival were with people doing V sign! That ruined my pictures that I had to delete…. I really don’t understand their need of doing that in front of a camera. … Maybe it is instinctive because they don’t know what to do! Sometimes I can tell them to not do it!
stuny Posted March 27, 2023 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2023 Churchill did it with the hand turned 180 degrees, so the palm side is towards the viewers. Hopefully, most of the people making the V to you did it Churchill's way. the other way was most often used by French Archers facing English soldiers.
Louis Posted March 27, 2023 Author Share #5 Posted March 27, 2023 I was always aware of Churchill V, and I was hoping that people making that sign to me were also aware of that!.... But now, there are so many different signs with hands that I have no idea about the meanings!
