stuny Posted November 6, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Black rhino are very easily perturbed and will charge at the least provocation. You can understand our nervousness when we went on foot tracking these leviathans. Two days later we tracked white rhino on foot. They are far more docile (we got closer), but that’s a post for another day. This is in Palmwag, Damaraland, Namibia. You can see our trackers and other related photos on the third page of Namibia photo galleries on our site.

jaapv Posted November 6, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 6, 2007 Very nice I can guess how you felt- I walked with Black Rhino in Matusadona, back when Zimbabwe was still a decent country. These things are impressive. Nice shot head-on too
stuny Posted November 7, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted November 7, 2007 Jaap - Thank you. I too miss the Zimbabwe prior to the recent horrors.
psquared Posted November 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2007 Excellent! You're a brave man. At least you had a heavy weapon in your hands in DMR and a long lens. Although, I doubt that would have mattered.
fernando_b Posted November 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 7, 2007 Could well be more docile, but a two or three tons animal... Compliments, Fernando.
stuny Posted November 7, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted November 7, 2007 Peter & Fernando - Thank you. One of the trackers told us of a bull rhino that charged him. He threw his bottle of water at the beast hitting him in the nose. The beast turned and walked away. I asked the tracker if the water was still or sparkling. jaapv Posted November 8, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 8, 2007 What lens did you use?The bokeh seems a bit swirly.Or is it the heat ?
stuny Posted November 8, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted November 8, 2007 Ivan & Bernardo - Thank you. Jaap - Thank you. The odd bokeh is due to my using the 500 mirror telephoto, and is one of the trade-offs of using that lens. 15 minutes later we spotted a rhino calf and cow, but perhaps due to light direction, I could not get a clear photo and went back to the 80-200 plus 2X extender. Even that was not clear, but better.
