Black rhino are very easily perturbed and will charge at the least provocation. You can understand our nervousness when we went on foot tracking these leviathans. Two days later we tracked white rhino on foot. They are far more docile (we got closer), but that’s a post for another day. This is in Palmwag, Damaraland, Namibia. You can see our trackers and other related photos on the third page of Namibia photo galleries on our site.

Peter & Fernando -

Thank you. One of the trackers told us of a bull rhino that charged him. He threw his bottle of water at the beast hitting him in the nose. The beast turned and walked away. I asked the tracker if the water was still or sparkling.

Ivan & Bernardo - Thank you.

Jaap - Thank you. The odd bokeh is due to my using the 500 mirror telephoto, and is one of the trade-offs of using that lens. 15 minutes later we spotted a rhino calf and cow, but perhaps due to light direction, I could not get a clear photo and went back to the 80-200 plus 2X extender. Even that was not clear, but better.
