Rant on Firmware Updates

i read your post carefully guy and regardless of whether any leica employee is a member here or whether guy mancuso has a laundry list or whether someone else here or anywhere says so-this is not an official leica site because they intelligently removed their connection to it prior to the release of the m8. just because there are people here who think they speak for leica doesn't make it so. furthermore I have to wonder still what it is you're waiting for?? the next firmware update I predict will not stop the "rants" (how childish) and some here will never be happy. it seems some people have found a place to gripe and bitch and be general buffoons at times. I for one am absolutely sick of it. I can assure you the next firmware update won't change your camera that much and it won't make you a better photographer so just chill out and enjoy the camera for what it is for crying out loud. Otherwise you'll never be happy with it. Firmware updates are like crack to some-you can't wait for it, it runs your life and in the end you never get the hit you were hoping for and just want more....B

I think there are two issues here.

1. Being happy with your camera. ie. you are getting great pictures, within the limits of your talent.

OR

2. Your pictures are being compromised by the current standard of firmware released.

In the latter case, maybe you should return your camera for repair, replacement or refund.

In the former, you will be enjoying a leading edge bit of gear with some quirks, rather like a highly strung racehorse or racing car. Both of which are exciting, deliver if you can drive them, but frustrating if you just want to 'drive down the street' to mindlessly go shopping.

The next M8 FW release should incorporate:

1) totally new WB algorithms - this is why they claimed it takes so long

2) full support for SDHC cards - which was already there in an earlier FW release

3) several improvements in operations of the camera (there are a lot of requests)

It was planned for November, at least this is what my Leica dealer kept telling me over the last 6 months. So lets give them November, but if that does not come then I really will loose my confidence in that company.

It is not just all about superior image quality, it is also about support and telling customers the truth and not letting them stand in the rain after spending this amount of money. Spending this means I really want (need) to use the tool and not fool around with crapy CS and support. Not only do their quality control and CS suck, but also their reliability in proper fixing of problems!

I have bought my M8 in May, have used it over all for maybe 6 weeks, since then either the camera is in Solms at CS or the lenses are there for adjustment. And finally the FW is not wht it promises to be since long time now.

How could that ever be a camera for serious photography - I see it rather as an expensive toy :-((((

Shame on Leica!

Bradley, if it winds you up so much why not simply move on and read some more acceptable threads, much more constructive that resorting to insults.

Erl, Life is rarely as simple as balck and white, everythings is great or crap. As I said before I am happy with the results, but the user experience is frustrating. I have also been to Solms personally and discussed both the QC problems and the operational frustrations. Amusingly the technician I spoke to thought (at that time) that several of my points were failures in my camera, but as it came back exactly the same I'm sure it was designed that way (eg exposure compensation can be set in manual exposure, but has no effect, hence if you want 1/3 stop exposure adjustment you can only use AE or guess the aperture. Pretty dumb to include 1/3 of a stop accuracy, but then limit it to AE IMHO)

your mileage may vary

Sorry, I'm missing something here. Are you complaining because in manual exposure mode you have to set the exposure manually?

no steve, I'm frustrated that you can only set 1/3rd stop exposure steps in AE. My preference is to work in manual exposure, but in manual you can only set 1/2 stops, or guess at an in between aperture setting. The camera (shutter) has the capability to work in 1/3rd stops, so why not in manual mode?

Personally, I am happy to work only in 1/2 stops. I find that the 1/6 stop maximum difference between the 1/3-increment stops and the 1/2-increment stops would never make enough of a real difference to my photos, because the screen on the back and the histogram cannot show it that accurately anyway. I imagine that Leica used 1/3-stops for the exposure compensation only because this is traditional. I would prefer 1/2-stops there too.

It would appear that Leica has misled more than a few people when they promised to increase the tempo of producing software fixes. Here we are in November and it has been over 8 months since we have seen any real changes to the firmware since we can't really count their refactoring effort in June as a fix since it was done for internal reasons.

Your answer is here:

I have the Venetian blind effect red on 1 camera, black on the other. I have the jumping scroll wheel on both.

I don't know that every camera has these problems, but they are widespread and have been around unsolved for yonks. They dont stop you using the camera but I am finding them increasingly annoying. If a FW update would resolve just these it would be encouraging.

I dont shoot jpg out of the camera so the white balance can be resolved in post. I would say however that the Leica auto exposure is primitive by modern standards, but I can live with it.

To those that take the view that all of this is inconsequential just imagine the more enjoyable use of the M8 without these problems.

Operationally the M8 is definitely not the best, in fact it must rank near the bottom.

... It's the best camera I've ever owned. And that would be the case even if the firmware was never updated.

I am not sure if it is in all respects the best but it is certainly the most enjoyable camera I've owned since the 1960's (when my expectations were a lot lower).

Still - a new version of the firmware is an exciting event to look forward to. Just imagine if they got everything perfect in v 1.1, we would have to start waiting for the M9 which is probably much further away than v1.2, 1.3 etc. of the M8 firmware.

My blinds are red on my silver body too !

And my wheel is a bit jumpy quite often.

I wouldn't mind seeing these quircks fixed but I'd prefer 100x a lower noise iso1250.

AWB ends up being secondary for me, I always shoot RAW and when I think that a manual AWB setting will not be good enough I shoot a whibal grey card.
