Positive Comments?

Is it possible to create a Forum which is focussed on collecting useful, positive help and hints for the M8?

To be honest I'm getting a little fed up with either knocking another camera, be it a brand or model, or following what starts as an interesting thread for it to break down into some self centered opinions or defence of either the stupid comments or the fact that we can afford to buy a M8.

I read the threads because maybe 1 in 100 times there is something useful, but these threads (and rangefinderforum) is reminding me why I don't go to the camera club any more.

"Nikon to the left, Canon to the right". "Buscuits and tea to be served in 1 hr".

What happened to posting useful information to help folks get more out of the camera?

What about composition, exposure, challenges, surprises. When I check some of the postings, I'm a little sad to see the photos badged as "First efforts", or "Grab Shot" etc .. WTF! show what you think are the best, don't just post for the sake of it.

Like I say, one in one hundred times I dip in here there are stunning photos, top class examples of what can only be described as delisious, images where you wish for a 30" display and a full size copy. I sometimes simple stare at the photos drinking in every element.

I relish the challenge of the technology, to achieve the results I expect. 100% of my photos start in my head, when I get my camera in front of my eye, I dismiss 90% of the ideas, of the 10% I take .. I may keep 1-2% .. I cannot concieve then covering up my bad efforts with "Grab Shot" so you won't knock my results.

The element of street photography is the biggest attraction to the M range, but how many people can do it? I can't, I strugle to get the right balance, intimate, and observation .. I have not yet made a photo which I could feel proud to post. They miss a subtle element which adds the interest to elevate the picture from a drab uninvolved 'snap'.

I want to see M8 examples supporting the reason why we have these cameras, with explanation of the location, time of day, exposure selected, under/over exposure. Software used, settings selected. I want to know about the balance of 'in-camera' settings vs desk top software. I want to know about people who shoot 10 pics a month vs those who take 10,000. Maybe some pen profile ?

I realise that we are talking 'Art' and as such anything goes, but come on .. lets try to eleivate ourselves, lets look for areas to improve, lets be insipred by other peoples efforts. Lets share the locations, the paths we followed to get the perfect composition. I'm sorry to critisize, but buying an M8, and sticking on a Noctilux .. to then post a "Grab Shot" of a bunch of flowers with one in focus and the rest oof .. woo hoo .. I remember doing the same with my first OM-1 after I read the manual about the Aperture ring ..

What about the guys who are using 50y/o glass. What about real life examples of the results?

Sorry, but I guess this is my parting shot .. or farting shot .. I guess I expected more.

Good luck to you guys who like to bitch .. but for one I'm lossing interest in it.

Two posts, the second of which looks a heck of a lot like a rant/bitch/complaint to me.

If you have a question, post it. I can assure you that if anyone knows the answer you'll receive the help you need. The photos are, as Andy says, in the Photo section.

After a while on the forum you will notice a general trend of the contributers who are making regular contributions who you find interesting and some which you will find less interesting. This content is both words and actual pictures.I tend to read most of the threads as everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.Personally I get a lot from this forum which assists me in getting more from my equipment. If you keep an open mind about some of the content and respect the other point of view I am sure you will get a lot of usefull info and ultimatly even more enjoyment from photography.:)

I have found that every forum goes through a few stages. At first there are only the early adopters, then come the complainers who expected better from the manufacturer. Eventually the product is no longer leading edge and may even be discontinued and that is when a forum becomes truly useful as the remaining people want to keep the product going just for the love of it.

I'm waiting for the M8 to be discontinued.

Phil - Less than a month since you joined, and in three posts you have reached such marvellous heights of pomposity. I'm sure it took me a lot longer.

One reality is that this forum has been a battleground for getting optimum performance from the M8; the battles were waged long before you graced the forum, ingenuity and generous sharing of information by many forum members was what helped make this forum pretty special. Had you been here at the turn of the year when keeping up with the extraordinary flow of information was a big commitment, you would realise that the present dullness of the forum is a blessing. People are out photographing, rather than being stressed because they can't 'get more out of the camera'.

But you being a recent joiner does not exclude you from the wealth of knowledge gained in this forum because there is a 'search' function; your time might have been better employed by using it rather than firing off lofty shots - parting, or otherwise. Or try framing a question not already flogged to death in the archives, and you will probably be amazed by the depth of knowledge you will have free access to, and by the generosity of people you will never meet.

Oh, and by the way ; you weren't talking 'art' you were talking 'craft' - and for the craft skills of using the M8 system this place has no equal.

In this thread alone, there are 5 or so links to posters' photo sites. These are good places to look for examples of photos. Some you will find more to your liking than others. After looking at what must be thousands of shots, I'm gradually understanding my own tastes regarding street shots and other unique advantages of RF and M8.

Recently I had some extensive use of a particular lens, and for those who were considering that lens or length for the M8, I posted a link. Here:

It's true that "thread drift" beyond a dozen or two posts can to lead off topic, personal chats, trollish quarreling - - -but if you are looking for posts with photos, these are easy to find. In fact, there are simply too many fine photos (and lots of pics that make you wonder why they were ever posted) to see, appreciate, or critique them all.

The strongest positive testaments to any camera are fine, creative photographs. Everything else is mostly idle yak, particularly on boards like this. (Yes, I include my remarks in this category.)

You can't learn much about a camera, or photography, by typing or reading. To quote Nike's slogan, just do it.

If you look in the photo forum you'll see good photographs and you'll see not so good photographs. The reason is that people have differing abilities and buying a camera doesn't by itself make you a better photographer. Being able to afford an M8 and a lens or two is no guarantee that the purchaser will be able to use them to their best.

I'm sure it's the same in lots of other fields, such as cars, guitars and xylophones.

Sure but isn't it a little more info helpful?

Like .. here is a 15mm shot at about f8 (from memory) shows the shop seller in and amongst the varied coloured fruits. At the front I was 1m from the apples ... That is what caught my attention .. then I changed for the 50mm lens to take the portrait. Whilst it is a 1.4 lens I stopped down to pull a little detail from the surrounding to keep some context. Then people learn?

As for me I and searching for hints to get my street photos from a jumble of people to organised chaos .. like maybe something like .. this is shot with my 21mm .. i was 2.5 m away from this subject. I pre focussed on the subject .. I dunno .. maybe the subject is a tree or a dog .. I had to wait 1 hour until they guy strolled into view .. once i saw him I knew it was the right combination .. then i had to hope i got the good composition .. lesson? then we learn to sit and wait. pick the environment and choose the composition ?

I joined when I bought an M8. I was following the progress of the M8 for a long time both here and in the rangefinderforum. I simply waited.

Funny but when I didn't own one I was amused with the petty tirades.

I guess I'll drop in here every so often, its like watching a soap opera, once a month and you are up to date.

Six bottle of any Euro beer is enought to turn anyone off steve. Northern hemisphere just doesnt understand good beer.

You are nuts! :) Germany has fantastic beer. Try Paulaner Dunkel, for example, or Duckstein. And Britain has stunningly good ale, although everyone there seems to be switching to Stella, for reasons I cannot fathom.
