cocker Posted September 25, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone any experience of dealing with MW Classic Cameras of London. They have a couple of items I'm interested in on their web site but I don't know of their reputation and would value any opinions. Thanks
Advertisement Posted September 25, 2007 Posted September 25, 2007 Hi cocker, Take a look here MW Classic Cameras london. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ejd Posted September 25, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 25, 2007 I have bought several things from them and found them to be very reliable. MW are two guys -- Mahendra Modi and David Woodford. I've generally gone around to their place -- office/storeroom/shop -- to have a look at the goods and chat to them when I've been thinking of buying something from them. chris_livsey Posted September 25, 2007 Share #6 Posted September 25, 2007 Recently bought a lens from them, in e-bay speak - as described. There was a shipping delay (a new driver on the run had problems locating us) they could not have been more concerned or helpful. They do get some interesting gear in, it's always worth a weekly look as the good stuff flies out.
thrid Posted September 25, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 25, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've used them. No problems. Nice looking store. Plus: They are reliable and reputable. Minus: They can at times be real Leica snobs.
leitz_not_leica Posted September 25, 2007 Share #8 Posted September 25, 2007 Expensive when compared to the US, as are most things in the UK.
brunom Posted September 26, 2007 Share #9 Posted September 26, 2007 I have bought many items off them over the last 15 years, from when they were in Ilford - never any problems. Their place is a glorified storeroom FULL of gear with a couple of desks. Over that time I've never had any inkling of any snobbishness - they just appear to be good old fashioned enthusiasts who travel a lot, frequently abroad, buying up equipment at fairs and shows. Highly recommended ! Bruno

wattsy Posted September 26, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 26, 2007 They can at times be real Leica snobs. I think you have The Classic Camera (of Pied Bull Yard) in mind. Different business altogether.
thrid Posted September 26, 2007 Share #14 Posted September 26, 2007 I think you have The Classic Camera (of Pied Bull Yard) in mind. Different business altogether. Near the British Museum, correct? In that case I must have gotten the two mixed up.

cocker Posted September 26, 2007 Author Share #17 Posted September 26, 2007 Mine was a 50mm black Summicron?? Ah- no problem then - a 35 L39 Elmar and a 50 L39 Summitar!

dougdarter Posted September 26, 2007 Share #19 Posted September 26, 2007 And very good to deal with - excellent toasted sandwiches and coffee also available and Free WiFi if you are into that sort of thing!! It's one of my favourite dealers. I use them almost exclusively for Canon equipment. What I like about them most, is that they call a spade, a spade, and that's a rare trait with camera dealers. BTW, I have both the Elmar, and the Summitar. The Summitar was recently returned from a CLA. Before it was very, very good, but since the CLA it's been breathtaking. It's certainly my favourite lens. It's a wee bit softer than the Summicron, but it is phenomenally sharp above f4, and resolves items in the distance which would be all but invisible to lesser lenses - hence the quest for a good, vintage Summicron. I want something with the resolving power of the Summitar, but with the clarity of the Summicron. I have an ASPH Summicron, but despite it being a fabulous lens, it does nothing for me in terms of the IQ I want from a lens. Good luck with your new lenses.
