Dan Gurney was the first driver to spray champagne on the winner's podium back in the 60s. He was one of the few Formula One drivers, who raced and then ran his own team - the others being Bruce McLaren and John Surtees. These were taken in 2012 at the Goodwood Revival, when Lord March (now the Duke of Richmond) ran a campaign to make him President R9/DMR and M9 Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted February 27, 2023 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2023 Charlie - Thank you. That's delightful. In 1964 Car & Driver magazine started a campaign of Dan Gurney flor president, and sold bumper stickers. My best friend & I put one on the vehicle we used to drive around North America that summer, and sometimes were asked about it. I remember our replying to one person that considering the opposition, Dan's the clear choice, which angered the individual. I have a superb 18th scale model of Dan's Cobra Daytona Coupe, and it has a 18th scale Dan Gurney for resident bumper sticker on the back. Eventually, Car & Driver mentioned that Dan was too young to qualify. I forget what race it was, but a Dan moment that I loved was when leading on the last lap of a race he ran out of petrol. He got out of the car, ran to the judges' stand and asked if he would be allowed to cross the finish line via starter motor, which he was, and he did, winning the race.
