Leica M9 JPGs - Impressions from our walk through the southern most European City in Greece: Ierapetra

Cori & I drove into town yesterday for an early dinner and to stroll around town. Ierapetra is a place full of character and one that absolutely matches my beat up old M9. Somehow the vibe of the town called for me to shoot on JPG instead of my usual DNGs. Here are a few photos. Have any of you ever been here?

Sorry, this is not European to me. Mediterranean at best. Try Paris, Rome, Antwerp, Bruges, Amsterdam, Berlin... What is European anyway ? 27 or more countries, even more 'tribes' and cultures and languages...

We as Belgians have a hard time defining what is Belgian. Three languages, 6 governments and no agreement on whatsoever 😱. Its only 1% of the surface of EU.

😊 I understand what you mean and yet southernmost city facing the African coast is the distinction it holds. I didn't realise till a few years ago, that Ierapetra in fact is further south than the most northern part of Africa. Sounds like you've got a tough time in Belgium with 6 governments ?? My goodness. How on earth do they get anything done? 

In defence of Ierapetra, some of the photos I've taken of it are a little more derelict maybe for the lack of a better term, and the reason for that is, other than portraiture I am very drawn to wabisabi types of subjects or emotions. 

Have you travelled to/through Greece yourself Dirk?

Well, it is no accident that we got the European capital (Brussels) in our country. We have lots of experience with making compromises. In fact our country has been a mini Europe for a long time where we still have problems with basically 3 parts of the country pulling in different and opposite directions politically. 

I have not been to Greece yet, but I have been in Crete, Cyprus, UK , France, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Romania, Moldova. It is all on the European continent, and very hard to find a common denominator.  It is said Greece is the cradle of Europe, but then they think more of Athens. IMO if Greece was the cradle then old Rome is the foundation of our continent stretching its influence as far north as  Scotland. And I am traveling daily on what was a Roman highway once, speaking a language with many words derived from Latin more than Greek (and Dutch is  a Germanic language, not Roman), ruled by laws going back to Roman times...

Olivier, these photographs are absolutely beautiful - really lovely observations of vignettes of scenes.

And very M9 - somehow! 

As a matter of interest (I don't think I've ever shot a JPEG on my M9!) do the JPEG colours come out with these tones? Or have you adjusted the JPEGs? Just curious.

I've shot jpeg images with the M9M, M10-P, M10-R, M10M and Q2M--not constantly, but enough to get a clear sense of how to work with the files. Processing with ACR in Bridge, I've found that unless exposures are completely blown the files are as pliable as DNGs and I discern no difference in image quality.
