If you’re worried your lenses will drop in value, that shouldn’t be a concern. Leica will probably charge a 1-2k premium on a potential leaf shutter enable variant if they ever do.

My post was tongue in cheek (despite my wording) and I didn't buy the lenses as investments.

I thought I would give the SL3 future owners an update on the Sony sensor front. The Fuji digital medium format GFX100 II, to be introduced September 12th, is rumored to have an updated 100MP BSI sensor with a faster readout speed and other features, link below. The older 60MP sensor variant, now over 4 years old, has been in the Sony A7R 4&5 and presumably soon the SL3. But with this GFX100 II news maybe the SL3 will get this new updated model...

GFX100 sensor is not full frame. It’s 44x33 mm compared to 36x24 mm for a full frame sensor.

by older 60mp are you talking about the M11/Q3 Full-Frame Sensor?

GFX100:
Sensor size Medium format (44 x 33 mm)

I get what you mean, although I heard rumors about SL3 and S4 will share the new sensor technology but I personally think SL3 will continues use the same sensor in M11 and Q3.

Yes 60MP = full frame. The Sony 60MP full frame sensor was first introduced over 4 years ago with the Sony A7R4. Of course the M11/M11M/Q3 Sony sensors have their own custom assembly designs that are specified by Leica. This new generation of BSI sensor is now in Sony's APS-C line, rumored to be in Fuji's new 100 II, so appears (to me) a good candidate 60MP full frame sensor for the SL3, again with Leica's custom design like the sensor cover thickness.

Louis, I would guess yes to all three of your questions. I don't think the SL3 size will be as small as the Lumix S5 II however. For one thing because of the imbalanced nature that would impart with many of the current larger SL lenses.

Hello. Did you decide to keep your SL2 ? What do you think about the size of the SL2 + SL 90 APO?

Is SL3, smaller than SL2, with tillable display and 60MP on the way? I wonder if Jono is already testing it!

Unless they change the name!…

With regards to the size of the SL3, maybe a hint here:

"Speaking to members of the Leica Society International in Dublin on October 14, Leica’s Executive Vice President Technology and Operations, Stefan Daniel" :

"In my discussion with Stefan after the talk, I touched on the cooperation with Panasonic and the prospects for future cameras, particularly the SL3. He said that the technical cooperation, known as L², between Leica and Panasonic was working well and agreed that it no longer made sense for the two companies to work entirely independently on camera development. Would the next SL be lighter or smaller than the current SL2? He said that some paring was possible, but any changes would not be dramatic. Again, of course, no hint of a timescale for the arrival of the SL3."

Yes to an SL3. Yes to a 60MP sensor. Probably not to a 70MP sensor even though 70 years coming into view next year.Yes to PDAF. Maybe to tillable LCD. No to a battery change a la M11. Perhaps to a Monochrom down the road. Perhaps to an SL3S. No to an SL3S Monochrom.

Any more questions?

Hi LBJ2. Yes, the Silver SL2 being a limited edition model (like my M10M Wetzlar) is a keeper for me. The SL 90 APO is just stunning, I haven't taken it off since I got it. The size is fine, larger than my Sonys with the 85/1.8 Batis and smaller than my 100S with GF 80/1.7. Any of those though I wouldn't hesitate to combo with my Q2 for street in my Billingham F1.4 bag.

That's interesting information in your post about the Dublin hint. I would guess we will get a sneak preview of the SL3 when the Panasonic Lumix S1R II is unveiled later this year.

I would imagine the Silver edition would be difficult to give up 😉 I'm glad the SL2 + SL 90 has worked out for you. Leica seems to have this knack for creating cameras and lenses I just enjoy using. Selecting between my Sony A1 kit and the SL2 for personal use often turns out to be what the heart wants vs what the mind thinks conundrum for me.

Also, and I might be reading too much into this but regarding the S1R II, I read this translated comment from an interview with Panasonic "At present, Panasonic focuses on the mid-range full-frame camera market, but in the next few years, it will supplement entry-level and high-end models"

If we look to the S1R II as a precursor to the SL3, then maybe this comment is another indicator of an SL3 coming no sooner than 2024 and maybe not in the early part of 2024 🤷🏽‍♂️

That depends on how you interpret it. I don't see the S1R as a high end, but as mid-range. Sony A1, Nikon Z9 and Canon R3 are high end.

Anyway, Leica and in general the L mount cannot afford to waste another year with such aggressive marketing competition.

Just curious. What do you consider as Panasonic's high end FF mirrorless cameras?

The Full Frame mirrorless camera market IMO is already more than over-supplied and many brands selling to a relatively small market. OTOH, we can never have enough lens options IMO. So I am totally fine with not too many cameras too frequently and let's see some more effort on the lenses--particularly more new SL APO lenses. The lack of appearance of the SL APO 21 for so long is concerning--if it weren't Leica who some might say are known for taking their time...even a very long time it seems.
