dpitt Posted January 19, 2023 Share #21 Posted January 19, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) M2, M3 DS, M3 SS, M4, M5, M6 Clasic, M6 TTL M3 DS feels smoothest, M2 is second. Both are CLA'D, recent CLA can make a huge difference. M3 was almost stuck because of some velvet that came in the gears before the CLA.
Advertisement Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Hi dpitt, Take a look here Which is your smoothest film M !. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
raizans Posted January 19, 2023 Share #22 Posted January 19, 2023 If the M6 is a 6 out of 10, and M3 is a 7 out of 10, the Pentax SV is a 10 out of 10. 😍

analogM Posted January 19, 2023 Share #24 Posted January 19, 2023 Big difference between smoothness of film advance and shutter release on my mp; film advance is buttery smooth (best of my M's with M4 as close second and shared 3rd place for M2 and M4-P). However, the shutter release on my mp is just terrible; heavy and very unsmooth, grindy feel.
Herr Barnack Posted January 20, 2023 Share #25 Posted January 20, 2023 Many moons ago, I sent my M4-P of to Leica Sorceress Extraordinaire Sherry Krauter for a CLA and the installation of the MP viewfinder. It came back absolutely butter smooth.
david_92 Posted January 20, 2023 Share #26 Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) I have an M2, M4, M6 and MP. M2 is absolutely the smoothest film advance and shutter, the MP and M4 are tied for film advance, however the M4 has a nicer shutter release, and my M6 is last over all. leicaoptik Posted January 20, 2023 Share #27 Posted January 20, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) nice thread here my M6 (1984) is butterly smooth, MP3 and a new MP are a bit less- I guess the M6 is run in...
plaidshirts Posted January 20, 2023 Share #28 Posted January 20, 2023 M2-M3-M4-MP, smoothest to least. They've all been CLAed recently and MP is only about a year old. MP's shutter release also feels very spongy, not light and crisp like the classics.
Topsy Posted January 20, 2023 Share #29 Posted January 20, 2023 Toss up between my 2003 MP and my 1962 M2 with my M4-P lagging behind somewhat.
CPA Posted January 20, 2023 Share #30 Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) I mentioned this on another topic: my M-A (November 2019) is significantly smoother than my MP (May 2021), it’s really very noticeable. Considering they were produced only 1.5y apart, I believe the difference results more from sample variation associated to mechanical items than anything else. Somehow, my M6 TTL was in between. 1joel1 Posted January 20, 2023 Share #32 Posted January 20, 2023 M4-P silver and MP are both wonderful. The roughest part is between my ears. Joel

edstock Posted January 22, 2023 Share #34 Posted January 22, 2023 Purely subjective no bench testing performed. My M2-KS-15, M4-P, M6 classic, M7, all are Leica smooth.
Huss Posted January 23, 2023 Share #35 Posted January 23, 2023 Just used my MP today. Holy moly it is smooth! So delightful I was burning through film just to work that action! Stuff like this sucks into the Leica fold….

pixie Posted January 25, 2023 Share #37 Posted January 25, 2023 It was always my '67' Leica M3. The M2 almost the same, though older, way less used. Surprise my M6TTL is now as smooth, as the others .
DoubleE Posted January 25, 2023 Share #38 Posted January 25, 2023 (edited) I have an M3 and an M2. Both freshly CLA'd by Golden Touch. If I had to guess the M2 is smoother, but it's a tough call. They are both incredibly smooth, but I prefer the way the film advance lever returns on the M2, it doesn't smack against the shutter speed knob (making a tiny dent) if I don't stop it in time the way my M3 does. I've noticed a lot of M3s are prone to this. Edited January 25, 2023 by DoubleE
