i'll reserve my thoughts about the rendering and usability until i've spent more time with this lens, but i haven't seen or come across anything that would make me think twice about using this lens for my main use - portraits

for all you pixel peeping enthusiasts - the full size JPEG images can be found in the OneDrive link below 🤓

Due to focus shift, this lens can be challenging to focus when stopped down to f/2.8-4 when using the rangefinder. But wide open or using an EVF (or stopped down to f/5.6 or smaller where the DOF overcomes the focus shift), it’s great for portraits.

i've now had an opportunity to shoot the Ultron during a portrait session. i've jotted down some initial thoughts 🤓

the Ultron is very compact and well balanced on my m246, but the trade off is that the focus is a tad finicky to use. this has already been noted by a few others, but for my purposes it's perfectly manageable. i don't think it's something a little practice can't solve.

at f1.9, the Ultron has a lot of personality:
  1. easily sharp enough for portrait work;
  2. swirls like the Helios 58mm (in the right circumstances);
  3. distinctive cats eye bokeh balls; and
  4. there is also a good amount of glow from spherical aberration (i understand this was by design re the omission of ASPH elements).

reasonable minds can differ on whether you like some or any of the above characteristics.

everything becomes more modern when stopped down to f2.8 circular bokeh balls and no swirl (although personally i was hoping this would occur at f4). there's also more contrast when stopped down too.

the Ultron is very much 2 lenses in 1 body.

focus shift is a non-issue for me in practical use because:
  1. there's going to be more variables coming from either me or my subjects moving (rather than from focus shift); and
  2. at the usual working distances for a head/shoulder (1.5m), 3/4 (3.5m) and full body (5+m), there's enough DOF to make it moot.

please don't take this as some kind of review, just the rambling thoughts of a portrait shooter 😅 your mileage may differ...

all the images were shot on the m246 with the Ultron at f1.9

I received the 75/1.5 and 75/1.9 MC version yesterday.  I did a quick comparison indoors using an M11 so no harsh lighting conditions.  I like the physical design and hood on the 1.9  a lot more than the 1.5.   The former is definitely more contrasty and a bit sharper at the wider apertures. There were subtle differences in bokeh but not substantial to make a difference for which was more pleasing at this point.  I used an EVF for focusing and did not get a good feel as of yet for focus throw and focus shift differences between the two although I was not paying close attention.  I will try to find time to do more comparisons today. The weather is wet and cloudy but if it clears up will see how it does in some harsher lighting.

Anyone else's copy of this lens have fairly stiff focusing resistance? Mine is consistent throughout the focusing range, but it's not at all fluid-feeling like the 75 1.5 I used to own.

Took a few first shots around the house this morning. All of these are at f/1.9.

Click for sharper versions.

haven't noticed.

i just went to compare against my CV 35mm f1.2 III - the ultron has slightly more resistance, but i have been using the 35mm for 8 months or so

Mine now seems to have smoothed out with additional use 👍
