Thanks for all the great tips! I’m getting to know the light possibilities and limitations a bit. As for the conversions, the film presets are great to get a quick and consistent look. If you convert manually in LR, do you start with the Adobe monochrome, or work in color, spit the channels and than convert? I feel the later path gives more control, but maybe I overlook LR features here..?

Note that LrC has several interesting BW presets that you can use as a starting point. You can continue fine tuning with B&W mix sliders.

I just use the Lightroom B&W presets (you can click the tiny star at the top right to bring them in to your favourites) and then adjust from there but I've also used monochrome too. I used to use Silver Efex Pro but haven't got around to any of that, I'm pretty pedestrian/slap-dash with my editing these days. :D
