No scientific lens testing, just for fun, I mounted four 35 mm (with adapters where needed) on the SL2.  All at f2.0. Can you guess which lens is which? Or which letter corresponds with the numbered picture.

A : Sigma 35 mm DG DN Art f1.2

B : Leica 35 mm Summilux-M f1.4

C : Leica 35 mm Summicron-M f2.0 v4

D : Canon 35 mm EF-L f1.4

Is the ruler the focus point?

Yes.  The 6 and 7 was my target focus point. I manually focused the Sigma and the Canon.  The field curvature surprised me, and also the fact that 35 mm is not always 35 mm.

Maybe I should add "pick your favourite" to the challenge 😀

My suggestion is:

C (35-Cron, the rather good book / corners and I’d say the warm tone; the dia blades still visible wide open. . .
B (35-Lux, overall quality, but soft edges, warm tone); does it have a steel rim?

D (Canon EF, overall lack of quality, just my aversion )

A (Sigma, everything is ‘right’ - but cool)

I started by eliminating the Sigma from the list. Then the Canon. 🤭

I need to clarify that lens B is the Summilux- M FLE.  Maybe this helps, or not.  😇

This helps a lot, or rather, I was already puzzled how good your Summilux 35  I or II had to be!
Now it turns out you meant the Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 FLE ASPH. That is a different race altogether.

My guess is now

  1. 35 lux
  2. 35 cron
  3. 35 Canon
  4. 35 Sigma

@dpitt : We have a winner !

Thanks. I identified the first two as Leica because of the 3D rendering. There was some confusion about which version of the 35 lux was involved at first...
And I do not know the Canon and Sigma.
Clarification about the FLE made sense.

@Alberti 2 out of 4.

@dpitt 0 out of 4

I was always good at mastermind, so you partially gave it away with this. Combined with the fact (i hoped) that the first 2 had to be Leica.

PS: differences were smaller than I thought. There is not a bad one amongst the 4. To me the Sigma is the least pleasing by a small margin. Maybe the test image was somewhat limited to really stress the optics.

Here you see of course the Sigma at f2.0.  The real purpose of this lens is wide open at f1.2 where it shows a pleasing bokeh.  But I agree that the Leica lenses demonstrate their quality compared to other brands (even in not so challenging conditions)

A surprise to me is the lack of sharpness of the Canon (even stopped down).  I used this lens a lot 20 years ago and considered it always as an excellent sharp lens.  Haven't used it since 2009 when I stepped into Leica.  Now I have the Sigma MC-21 adapter and must conclude that there is a significant difference between Canon (even their L lenses) and Leica glass.  (but more on that later when I post another rainy day "mastermind" challenge.)
