All at f2.0. Can you guess which lens is which? Or which letter corresponds with the numbered picture. A : Sigma 35 mm DG DN Art f1.2 B : Leica 35 mm Summilux-M f1.4 C : Leica 35 mm Summicron-M f2.0 v4 D : Canon 35 mm EF-L f1.4 1. Welcome, dear visitor! Robert E Posted January 14, 2023 Share #3 Posted January 14, 2023 Interesting, I love these kind of practical tests. Is the ruler the focus point?
Stef63 Posted January 14, 2023 Author Share #4 Posted January 14, 2023 1 minute ago, Robert E said: Is the ruler the focus point? Yes. The 6 and 7 was my target focus point. I manually focused the Sigma and the Canon. The field curvature surprised me, and also the fact that 35 mm is not always 35 mm. Maybe I should add "pick your favourite" to the challenge 😀
Alberti Posted January 14, 2023 Share #5 Posted January 14, 2023 My suggestion is: C (35-Cron, the rather good book / corners and I’d say the warm tone; the dia blades still visible wide open. . . B (35-Lux, overall quality, but soft edges, warm tone); does it have a steel rim? D (Canon EF, overall lack of quality, just my aversion ) A (Sigma, everything is ‘right’ - but cool) I started by eliminating the Sigma from the list. Then the Canon. 🤭
dpitt Posted January 14, 2023 Share #6 Posted January 14, 2023 Hard for me because I do not know the Canon and Sigma, but I like the challenge: 35 cron 35 lux 35 Sigma 35 Canon

Alberti Posted January 14, 2023 Share #8 Posted January 14, 2023 this is what I meant as list . . 1 = C (35-Cron) 2 = B (35-Lux) 3= D (Canon EF) 4 = A (Sigma)

Stef63 Posted January 14, 2023 Author Share #10 Posted January 14, 2023 I need to clarify that lens B is the Summilux- M FLE. Maybe this helps, or not. 😇

Maybe this helps, or not. 😇 This helps a lot, or rather, I was already puzzled how good your Summilux 35 I or II had to be! Now it turns out you meant the Summilux-M 1:1.4/35 FLE ASPH. That is a different race altogether. My guess is now 35 lux 35 cron 35 Canon 35 Sigma
Alberti Posted January 15, 2023 Share #12 Posted January 15, 2023 Having a FLE in the game I expect that the last one was definitely FLE. So . . swap around 1 = C (35-Cron) 2 = A (Sigma) 3= D (Canon EF) 4 = B (35-Lux)
Stef63 Posted January 15, 2023 Author Share #13 Posted January 15, 2023 @AlbertiNice try, but now only one is correct. 😕

Stef63 Posted January 15, 2023 Author Share #15 Posted January 15, 2023 (edited) @dpitt : We have a winner ! It is indeed the lux, cron, canon and sigma Edited January 15, 2023 by Stef63
dpitt Posted January 15, 2023 Share #16 Posted January 15, 2023 (edited) 8 minutes ago, Stef63 said: @dpitt : We have a winner ! Thanks. I identified the first two as Leica because of the 3D rendering. There was some confusion about which version of the 35 lux was involved at first... And I do not know the Canon and Sigma. Clarification about the FLE made sense. 12 hours ago, Stef63 said: @Alberti 2 out of 4. @dpitt 0 out of 4 I was always good at mastermind, so you partially gave it away with this. Combined with the fact (i hoped) that the first 2 had to be Leica. PS: differences were smaller than I thought. There is not a bad one amongst the 4. To me the Sigma is the least pleasing by a small margin. Maybe the test image was somewhat limited to really stress the optics. Alberti Posted January 15, 2023 Share #17 Posted January 15, 2023 Great excercise. The FLE 'should' be better. That is, I have a 45mm DG DN myself (not as complex for sure but with a certain clean signature and bokeh) and it can be excellent in many pictures. Stef63 Posted January 15, 2023 Author Share #18 Posted January 15, 2023 Here you see of course the Sigma at f2.0. The real purpose of this lens is wide open at f1.2 where it shows a pleasing bokeh. But I agree that the Leica lenses demonstrate their quality compared to other brands (even in not so challenging conditions) A surprise to me is the lack of sharpness of the Canon (even stopped down). I used this lens a lot 20 years ago and considered it always as an excellent sharp lens. Haven't used it since 2009 when I stepped into Leica. Now I have the Sigma MC-21 adapter and must conclude that there is a significant difference between Canon (even their L lenses) and Leica glass. (but more on that later when I post another rainy day "mastermind" challenge.)
