I tried some RRS plates that I have now but they are lacking in their ability to securely hold the camera without some degree of slippage.  The fact that the tripod attachment point is at the end of the camera is not helping.  What are some of the options of attaching the a film M to a tripod (with an Arca Swiss ball head and RRS quick release clamp) in either landscape or portrait position?  I am thinking I want to use film to stitch panoramas as well as night shots so will need a stable tripod attachment solution.

RRS and Kirk used to make custom plates for the film Ms - might be worth enquiring with them directly, or looking out for a secondhand plate. Acratech still seems to make one:

A search found this very expensive thing, apparently made in Wetzlar:

No one ever made an L plates for analog M body. Really Right Stuff had the best baseplate but stopped making it years ago. I had one, sold it then regretted it when it was hard to find a replacement. I found a small company that made an exact copy but unfortunately I don't remember their name and I'm pretty sure they're out of business. Acratech will probably be your best chance. The first photos are of the RRS copy and the grip on the M4-2 is 3D printed and grooved for Arca-Swiss. Good luck!

Thank you Anbaric.  The Acratech will work just fine.  The Wetzler made one looks mighty fine but for the few times I will use the plate, the cheaper one will work just as well.

Thanks so much for the advice madNbad.

I have spent a lot of time and money looking for a decent Arca-Swiss plate. Most of the good ones are hard to find and require a hex wrench. The grip has a screw that can be tightened with a coin. Here's a link if you're interested : http:// lmedinc. It has raised tabs to keep the body from rotating. The grip is comfortable and unlike most is slotted so I can actually use the self timer on my M4 Best of all, it didn't cost a fortune..

Thank you all very much for all of your suggestions.  So far, I like the Acratech solution the best.  The base plate seems small enough to not add weight nor bulk, but prevents twisting of the plate from the camera and also allows enough purchase of the QR clamp to the base for landscape orientations.  I did call them and asked for a L plate solution.  They recommended a L plate with its own screw clamp that seems reasonable.  On the occasions that I want a vertical shot, maybe to stitch a panorama, I would take this out of the bag for use then.

The ordinary 14405 Leica M grip has a centre tripod screw.
